Deaf Education Interpreter Intern, Fall 2025, District Wide

Overview:


The Deaf Education Interpreter Intern will provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting services to students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing in various educational settings throughout the district. This internship is designed to provide hands-on experience and training for aspiring interpreters.
Responsibilities:

* Establish and maintain conversations using sign language with students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing

* Participate in observations and staff development targeted at improving sign language proficiency

* Attempt the Receptive/Expressive Interpreter Certification Test and provide results within 30 days

* Demonstrate professionalism in all ethical areas, including student confidentiality

* Interact with administrators, teachers, staff, students, visitors, and individuals unfamiliar with the educational setting

* Provide in-class signed and/or oral support according to the specifications of the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP)

* Assist with duties related to the deaf education setting or mainstream setting as requested by educational staff

* Monitor and report concerns about student individual needs or modifications to the deaf education case manager or cooperating teacher

* Demonstrate flexibility when role shifts take place

* Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

* Associate's degree or 60 or more credit hours from an accredited college or university with a minimum GPA of 2.0

* Passed the BEI Test of English Proficiency

* Associate's degree related to interpreting or in the field of Deafness preferred

* Experience working with children

Benefits:

* Salary range of $33,173 - IP 7, with additional stipend based on level of certification (Level I or Basic: $2,500, Level II, CI/CT, SC, IC/TC, NIC: $3,500, Level III or Advanced (BEI or NIC): $4,500)
