First thing’s first. Before you leave your workplace make sure you ask your employer about healthcare continuation and collecting unemployment. Most employers will give you about a month (sometimes longer) extension with your healthcare plan. Especially if you have a family.

If your employer provides you with a severance package then you might have some money to pay for COBRA coverage. Right now especially, you do not want to be without health insurance. With more and more people getting sick every day it’s going to be important that you ask (and push hard) for a continuation that will last you 1-3 months.

Make sure you’re eligible for unemployment benefits

You also need to make sure your employer isn’t going to contest unemployment. It’ll be harder to receive unemployment benefits if your employer doesn’t believe your application is eligible. Then you need to apply. Even New York state has begun waiving the 7-day waiting period for those benefits to kick in, as long as the unemployment has come from the COVID-19 closures or quarantine.

Contact your landlord

Now that you’ve got the most important steps out of the way, what’s next? Rent. If you think you may not be able to pay rent you need to retrieve your lease. Since they’re probably going through a similar situation that you are, or are at least aware of the situation in the United States, then they may be a little more lenient with the lease during this pandemic. But there are other companies that aren’t doing a whole lot to help the situation. If you’re at one of those companies, then it’s time to start looking for other work from home or remote opportunities. At this point, it would be good to start devising a backup plan. It’s never a bad idea to have some work from home opportunities lined up just in case. On the topic of delivery, there are other options. Many restaurants are turning to partner with UberEats, Grubhub, DoorDash and OrderUp, among other food delivery services.   • Those who are diagnosed with COVID-19
  • Those who are immediate family members and caretakers of someone diagnosed with COVID-19

For the most part, people covered are those unemployed under no fault of their own or have seen hours reduced (drastically) due to COVID-19.

If any item on this list describes your situation, then States have been asking the affected to follow a few simple guidelines:

  1. Requests for unemployment assistance should be done online, if at all possible.
  2. If you think you’re eligible, you should apply immediately. This is because the sooner you apply, the sooner you can get your aid.
