John Crane company history timeline

1917

What started in 1917 as the Crane Packing Company in Chicago grew into a world leader in engineered sealing systems with 19 manufacturing sites and more than 6,500 employees throughout more than 50 countries.

John Crane was founded in 1917 as Crane Packing Company.

1938

By 1938, all Chrysler cars used Crane Packing mechanical seals on their water pumps .

1939

In 1939, the company invented the first automotive mechanical seal.

1948

Crane Packing introduced its “CHEMLON” line of Teflon-based packing material for use on pumps, valves, hydraulic fittings and cylinders, coaxial cables, and gaskets in 1948.

In 1948, Crane Packing developed its own seal face lapping machines and processes, which evolved into Crane Packing’s Lapmaster division.

1950

In 1950, Crane Packing purchased 26 acres (110,000 m) of land in Morton Grove, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago.

1956

Construction began on the new company offices the next year and continued until the main office, laboratory, and cafeteria were completed in 1956.

1998

The company’s interest in R&D and growth through strategic investment led to the acquisition of three sealing companies in 1998 - Sealol, Safematic and Flexibox.

2006

2007

In 2007, a California jury awarded $1 million to Steven Pelley, who developed mesothelioma after exposure to asbestos through products manufactured by John Crane and others.

2008

The purchase of the Netherlands-based Indufil BV in 2008 added filtration systems to the company’s comprehensive portfolio.

2010

He was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2010.

2011

Crane was left as the lone defendant in another case that cost the company $2.4 million in 2011 and involved asbestos products supplied to the United States Navy.

2012

2015

In 2015, a New York jury awarded $1.4 million to the estate of William Voelker, a United States Navy veteran.

2016

In April 2016, a Philadelphia jury awarded $6.44 million to William Roverano, who filed a lawsuit against John Crane and others claiming he developed mesothelioma as a result of working with the companies’ asbestos products.

2017

2017 — On March 9, 2017, John Crane celebrated its 100-year anniversary.

Of the 4,450 asbestos lawsuits filed in the United States in 2017, about one-quarter were filed in Madison County, according to a KCIC industry report.

2018

2018 — John Crane acquires Seebach GmbH to complement existing filtration business, enhancing technology leadership in energy applications, and grow into other mission-critical process industries.

2019

In 2019, an Illinois panel upheld a $4.5 million verdict against John Crane involving a former employee who developed mesothelioma.
