    We are seeking a Nurse Practitioner who will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team and is responsible for providing comprehensive and age-appropriate care to both well and ill patients. Educates patients and families and intervenes in acute or chronic illness. Practices within the guidelines of the department and institution and in accordance with the Nurse Practitioner-Physician Written Agreement required and approved by the State of Maryland and the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Maryland. Is granted Senior Staff privileges by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. These privileges are reviewed annually by the University and the Hospital. Specific Duties & Responsibilities * Provides comprehensive, age-appropriate, and episodic care to patients as a member of the multidisciplinary health care team. * Coordinates scheduling of and conducts comprehensive and/or episodic health assessments of patients/families with real, potential, acute and/or chronic health problems * Performs history and physical examination as it relates to chief complaint, including following guidelines of specific protocols. * Discriminates between normal and abnormal findings in the history and physical. * Identifies differential diagnosis. * Assesses severity of illness and establishes plan for evaluation. * Records and documents assessment data necessary to maintain, coordinate, and/or expedite required services. * Orders appropriate laboratory studies, radiographic studies, and other tests specific to the diagnosis or protocol. * Follows daily progress of patients, including history and physical exam, ordering, performing, and interpreting laboratory and radiological data and establishing and implementing a plan of care based on those interpretations and observations. Makes referrals to appropriate specialties. * Ensures follow through to book required treatment plan after consultation. This may include gynecologic exams for brachytherapy procedures and preparing patients appropriately for other site-specific radiation appointments including simulation, radiologic studies, and radiation therapy. * Follows long-term progress of patients including history and physical examination, orders and interprets re-staging tests, and assesses status. * Provides outside referring physicians with reports on patients' status by ordering, interpreting, collecting, and communicating results and recommendations to the physician. Consults with referring physicians regarding questions specific to the treatment course and/or its complications, suggesting treatment plans and making appropriate referrals for further follow up. * Observes for evidence of acute and long-term effects of radiation and provides accurate and timely management for such side effects. * Provides education to patient and family members regarding diagnosis, complications, treatment, and medications in order to provide them with continuous information. * Conducts telehealth visits as appropriate for follow-up care, symptom management, or triage, ensuring timely communication and documentation in the EMR. * Provides education to community providers and to patient support groups in the area. * Performs, when applicable within the assigned service line, the following functions, including but not limited to routine laboratory procedures such as cultures, smears, venipunctures, electrocardiograms and assist in pre-operative and post-operative evaluation of patients * Performs independent assessments and follow-up care for surgical patients * Support in-office procedures, including flexible laryngoscopy and post-operative drain management * Coordinate perioperative planning and post-surgical symptom management * Collaborate with attending surgeons on new patient evaluations, particularly those referred for multidisciplinary care * Help triage new referrals and streamline the patient intake process to enhance efficiency across the service line * Maintains CPR certification. * Maintains airway, breathing, circulation * Starts and provides basic CPR * Orders and administers anti-anaphylactic and supportive medications * Prescribes medications, including oral, parenteral, intramuscular, or subcutaneous drugs. Prescribes Schedule 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, 5 drugs under the guidelines of the Maryland Nurse Practice Act and the DEA. * Will work with specific protocols to ensure that all protocol-driven tests, examinations, and procedures are ordered, performed, and evaluated and data is retrieved, entered on appropriate forms. * Coordinates scheduling, orders appropriate tests, evaluates results, records data, performs patient evaluations, and participates in care of patients on specific protocols regarding specific disease entities and treatment. Works in collaboration with the Principal Investigators of specific protocols to ensure the completeness of protocol requirements. * Will manage collection and entry of patient information into clinical database in support of outcomes research. * Provides preceptorship to RN, Masters preparing NP, and PA students through collaboration with and direction from their respective University professors. Supervises and evaluates student/patient interactions in an academic setting. Assumes responsibility for patient care as provided by the student. Is granted affiliate/adjunct faculty status with the various universities with whom he/she works. * Develops expertise and expands knowledge in specific areas and shares that knowledge and expertise with colleagues as consultant in planning care for patients. Participates in rounds, tumor boards, quality improvement, and multidisciplinary care planning meetings. * Learns to perform oncology-related procedures, such as bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, lumbar puncture, bone marrow harvest, and other procedures as called upon within the scope of practice. * Assumes fiscal responsibility with working knowledge of evidence-based medical model. * Effectively uses resources of the patient and the institution. Is aware of and adheres to specific capitations and limitations of the patient's insurances while organizing and optimizing individualized care based on the disease state and restraints imposed by the HMO or insurances. * Utilizes referrals to Home Health or palliative care in order to provide optimum care in the appropriate setting. * Has knowledge of and utilizes all available resources in the event that the patient's resources are limited or unavailable in order to provide medical care and social well-being. * Works in collaboration with the physician(s) and realizes and is able to detect those deviations from normalcy or from established protocols which require consultation and/or referral to appropriate specialty areas including physicians, nutrition, psycho-social, and other resources. * Understands and works within the scope of the Nurse Practitioner-Physician written agreement and the State Nurse Practice Act and realizes limitations within the medical scope of the practice. * Participates in quality and safety initiatives, including incident reporting, morbidity and mortality reviews, and CUSP efforts, to enhance patient outcomes and improve practice standards. * Knows the formal and informal departmental goals, standards, policies, and procedures which may include some familiarity with other departments within the division or hospital. Is sensitive to the interrelationship of both people and functions within the department. * Prioritizes and organizes work to meet changing priorities. Assumes authority and responsibility for coordinating and making decisions regarding patient care. Assumes responsibility and accountability for organizing time and workload to meet patient, staff, and departmental needs. Performance is assessed based on clinical quality metrics, patient satisfaction, timely documentation, collaboration, and contribution to team-based care. * Authority for coordinating and making decisions regarding patient care. May direct the activities of the non-physician health care team regarding health care issues of the patient. * Reports to the attending in charge of the patient's care and ultimately to the physician who signed the Nurse Practitioner-Physician written agreement. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities * Advanced clinical skills in oncology, with a strong preference for radiation oncology and/or head and neck surgery experience. * Knowledge of radiation therapy modalities, treatment planning, simulation processes, and radiation-induced toxicities. * Research knowledge, including interpretation, utilization, and conduct. * General computer knowledge and capability to use computer for both in-person and telemedicine interactions * Knowledge of and adherence to infection control and radiation safety protocols * Highly detail-oriented practice builder with growth mindset and a track record of providing high quality care * Ability to incorporate into practice theoretical concepts and advanced clinical skills with patients, families, and interdisciplinary health care team members * Analytical ability necessary to diagnose patients' illnesses and to develop and implement plans of action for long- and short-term management of acute and chronic health care needs. * Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with all members of the interdisciplinary health care team to enhance collaboration and problem solving. * Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, in order to provide information to patients and health care personnel. * Ability to function effectively and independently in a fluid, dynamic, and rapidly changing environment.
