The position presents an opportunity to develop and apply computerized model-based solutions to accelerate the development of new medicines. Design appropriate strategies to apply a variety of computational tools to support the development and scale-up of pharmaceutical manufacturing processes. Analyze and interpret data collected from laboratory experiments and/or from manufacturing (including parameter estimation). Actively participate in the design of process conditions for process understanding (experiments) or for material production in manufacturing (nominal conditions). Understand and utilize thermodynamics and material characterization techniques as an informing factor to model-based solutions. Develop user-friendly computational tools to be deployed across SMDD to support the development of specific manufacturing platforms. Train the SMDD general community in the use of platform computational tools. Serve as a member of integrated commercial teams responsible for the development and demonstration of new processes. Take leadership in the supervision of the compliance with regulations, guidelines, procedures, and practice governing drug research and development, including the departmental and corporate standard operating, good manufacturing practices, and safety procedures. Collaborate closely with multifunctional organizations such as Product Delivery, Project Management, Quality, Manufacturing, and Regulatory to execute and deliver material and information for clinical trials and regulatory submissions. Develop the external manufacturing network, oversee activities and install key capabilities within contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs). Engage in a highly collaborative work environment across and beyond SMDD and Lilly, including external academic researchers and pre-competitive collaborations. Direct and mentor less experienced scientists and engineers to deliver the portfolio and innovation projects. Promote diverse thought and experience to deliver innovative solutions that address unmet technical needs. Publish and present original research externally, author internal technical documents and develop and document control strategies for new product registration applications (manufacturing process and development history portions). Qualifications / Requirements: * Minimum of a Bachelors Degree is required, Advanced Degree strongly preferred. Mechanical Engineering background highly desired. * At least 5-7+ years of related engineering experience required (3-5+ with Advanced Degree); Medical Device engineering experience strongly preferred. * CAD (Solidworks or Creo) required, PLM (Windchill) strongly preferred. * Ability to lead complex projects. * Effective verbal communication (large and small groups); clear and concise written communication; decision-making without supervisory input; effective team interaction with personnel or other divisions and companies. * Must deal with abstract and complex "cause and effect" relationships and make sound decisions, often with limited data, which impact product and facilities. * Knowledge of and experience in applying scientific principles, analytical techniques, and judgment to independently resolve technical issues and establish new methods, controls & procedures is required. * Knowledge of chemistry and physics, with demonstrated understanding of material characterization, structure-property relationships, formulation development and processing and utilization towards application development is preferred. * Must be willing to work in a laboratory environment performing hands-on experiments and be able to clearly communicate findings (oral or written) to the project team. * Broad knowledge of medical device product development and working knowledge of biocompatible materials and their application in medical devices, including familiarity with regulations and requirements for the development of implantable medical devices is preferred. * Ability to work with minimal supervision. * Familiarization with material and process specifications. * Good interpersonal skills, effective oral and written communication skills. * Proficient using Microsoft Office Software. * Must be willing to work in a laboratory environment performing hands-on experiments and be able to clearly communicate findings (oral or written) to the project team. * Travel: Up to 20% travel may be required.
