Johnson Technology Inc company history timeline

1895

The company purchases US$1.65 billion from woman- and minority-owned suppliers and is Walmart’s “Automotive Supplier of the Year.” The American Society of Mechanical Engineers names the 1895 temperature control system a “mechanical engineering landmark.”

1897

In 1897, graduate nurse Elizabeth W--- was the head nurse in the company’s Aseptic Department.

1908

As the tiny startup founded by the Johnson brothers grew, Mathilda earned increasingly greater responsibilities, supervising a manufacturing department by 1908.

That same year, 1908, Johnson & Johnson took a step even further: the company hired its first female scientist, chemist Edith von Kuster, recruiting her from the University of Minnesota.

1911

Founded in 1911 as Globe Electric, the company had invented the thin-wall, high-strength polypropylene battery case, a universally recognized breakthrough in battery design.

1912

Johnson College, a two-year technical college, was founded by Orlando S. Johnson, a wealthy coal baron in the Scranton area who died in 1912.

Opening in 1912, the school admitted young men and women who had completed a minimum of eight years of school and were 14 years old.

Joseph Cutler, who started with Johnson Service Company as a sales engineer in 1912, becomes president.

1927

In 1927, Edith H---, head of the Ligature Department at Johnson & Johnson (our sterile suture manufacturing department), was sent by the company to Slough, England to train employees at the company’s new U.K. operating unit in the manufacture of sterile sutures.

1961

In 1961, when the percentage of working women in science was still small, scientist Edythe L--- supervised the Johnson & Johnson Research Center Bacteriology Lab.

1972

One of the company’s pioneering women research scientists to achieve a senior management position was Doctor Alice R---, who became the first female operating company board member at Johnson & Johnson in 1972.

1994

Responding to the continuing technological changes in society, the board, administration, faculty, staff, and students conducted an intense two-year self-study, beginning in 1994, to assess the institution’s strengths and weaknesses.

Continuing with the expansion of technology programs, a Veterinary Technology program was introduced in 1994.

1998

The graduating class of 1998 was the first class to receive either an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree or an Associate in Science (A.S.) degree.

2004

In January 2004 the College opened the Animal Care Center as a teaching facility to enhance the Veterinary Technology educational experience.

2005

The Radiologic Technology program received accreditation by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) in May 2005.

2017

In 2017, Johnson & Johnson launched Re-Ignite, a paid career reentry program for professionals in STEM2D careers who want to return to the workforce after having been out for at least two years.
