Johnston Community School District company history timeline

1914

What started as a one building district in 1914 is now comprised of five elementary schools, two middle schools, a high school, an administrative resource center, a community education center, and a transportation and building and grounds facility.

1915

1915 - A new K-9 building was built on land donated by Ben McKee family (where the fire station now sits)

1920

1920 - First high school graduation held and school certified as an accredited high school

1932

1932 - The first school student council was organized and the school colors were changed from blue and white to yellow and blue and later to purple and gold.

1953

Until a lunchroom was constructed in 1953, students and teachers either carried their lunches or went home for lunch.

1958

1958 - An elementary school was built and called Johnston Elementary.

1962

1962 - The school district was expanded with acquisition of the Herrold District and name changed to "The Johnston Community Schools"

1968

1968 - South wing added to Lawson Elementary

1968 - School district purchased building at corner of 62nd and 59th Court.

1971

Johnston Elementary School educated children from the first grade to the eighth grade until 1971.

1972

Jesse Grissom, a bricklaying teacher, and his students built and moved into the present masonry shop during the 1972-73 school year.

1976

· In 1976, a large open concept wing was built onto the back of the school.

1977

In 1977, Erwin Middle School was opened for sixth, seventh, and eighth grades.

1982

In the fall of 1982,the student lounge was converted into the "Focus" room and the lunchroom was enlarged and air-conditioned.

1987

· In 1987, the playground was redesigned.

1990

1990 - School district offices move to building west of Wallace Elementary

The late 1990's brought forth the expansion of student and faculty parking, new playing fields, and three additions to the main building.

1998

In 1998, Clayton High School underwent major renovations and construction.

2000

2000 - Beaver Creek Elementary built and opens doors

2000 - District purchases Pioneer building to become Johnston Administrative Resource Center, housing district-wide staff and departments

2001

2001 - Horizon Elementary built and opens doors

2003

The current gymnasium, named after former basketball coach Jeff Adams, opened in December of 2003.

2004

2004 - Summit Middle School built and opens doors.

2006

In August of 2006, Clayton High School celebrated the opening of its newest addition, a 30 classroom wing, which houses approximately 700 students.
