1976

Under his leadership, the business incorporated in 1976, purchased its first building in Downtown Fresno and evolved again with a new name — the Fresno Daily Legal Report — in order to broaden readership.

1986

The Journal Company took complete control of Add, Inc., in 1986 and 20 years later renamed it Journal Community Publishing Group.

As a thriving media company it caught the attention of Affiliated Publications, the owners of the Boston Globe, which bid $600 million for it in 1986.

1991

In 1991 Midwestern Relay acquired Minneapolis-based Norlight, a fiber-optic private carrier.

1995

Perry Printing was sold in 1995, and in that same year the Journal and Sentinel were merged.

1998

The Journal Broadcast Group acquired ten radio stations in 1998, in such cities as Omaha; Knoxville, Tennessee; and Boise, Idaho.

2002

Most of its acquisitions had been paid for in cash, but in 2002 the company began exploring the possibility of using outside funding to fuel growth.

2003

The outlines of taking the company public began to take shape, and in September 2003 an initial public offering of stock became a reality.

Ground was broken on a $112 million newspaper production facility, which opened in 2003.

2004

In 2004 a Green Bay television station was bought.

2005

A pair of television stations, located in Fort Myers, Florida, and Tucson, Arizona, were acquired in late 2005.

2007

2007 2007 Milestones First registered user during closed beta 17 articles are submitted to Frontiers in Neuroscience and published during closed beta Frontiers is founded by Henry and Kamila Markram, two neuroscientists from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL)

2008

2008 2008 Milestones Gold Open Access business model is adopted The open-access journal series Frontiers in Neuroscience, opens for article submissions First investment from Kaltroco The private holding vehicle of the Koltes family, kick-starting growth.

2009

2009 2009 Innovations Research Topics Frontiers introduces the concept of Research Topics, themed article collections around trending research and organized by leading researchers

2011

2011 2011 Milestones 20,000 editorial board members Innovations Author-Level Metrics Article views and downloads on all articles aggregated at author level

2012

2012 2012 Milestones 5,000 articles published 2 new journals launched Frontiers in Oncology Frontiers in Pediatrics Innovations Frontiers Research Network Profiles enriched with ability to connect with and stay up-to-date with researchers and content

2015

The Legal Directory celebrated its 50 th anniversary in 2015.

2017

That product is called The Business Journal, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2017.

2021
