FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE:
Analyzes, researches, and responds to a variety of complex, sensitive, confidential, and specialized written inquiries from Congressional and other sources. Provides comprehensive research and evaluation of the background information necessary to develop replies, compose or guide written responses communicating the Postal Service's position on significant issues, and provides technical oversight and guidance to unit analysts.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Researches and obtains feedback, informational material, and data from other functional areas concerning postal policies, programs, and activities related to information requests; ensures consistency of responses; and maintains appropriate resource materials for training of unit employees and other purposes.
2. Analyzes, evaluates, and integrates feedback, informational materials and data to develop timely and appropriate written responses to a variety of complex, sensitive, confidential, and specialized written inquiries; and ensures that responses clearly explain and address the relevant issues and facilitate understanding of the Postal Service's position.
3. Edits and rewrites materials prepared by other functional areas and unit analysts; ensures informational accuracy, effective presentation, correct grammar, and timely processing. Obtains concurrence from functional offices and disseminates information to government relations managers.
4. Develops, implements, and coordinates ongoing processes for establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other functional areas to facilitate effective communication between the Postal Service and key Congressional requesters.
5. Researches, writes, and updates material to be included in core language used in the development of written responses to Congressional and other inquiries.
6. Provides oversight, and technical guidance, and training to unit employees. Oversees and conducts complex assignments and monitors critical performance points.
REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to conduct research in support of organizational requirements, including gathering, analyzing, and interpreting data, and reporting results.
Ability to write a logical and factual explanation of the organizational position on various issues, incorporating information obtained through research.
Ability to provide direction and technical guidance to others in analyzing issues, identifying and researching information resources, developing written responses, and addressing improvement needs.
Knowledge of the English language, including composition, grammar, punctuation, and spelling, at a level sufficient to obtain information necessary to develop, edit, and write the most complex and high-level responses and documents, and review and edit the work prepared by staff.
Ability to analyze the most complex critical and sensitive written inquiries such as Congressional inquiries, particularly those with policy implications, to determine core issues and information needed to respond.
Ability to manage workload to meet established standards and support department response objectives.
Ability to research information necessary to prepare responses and reports, including identifying the most appropriate sources and methods to gather the information and to ensure responses accurately present organizational policies and procedures
EXAMINATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must perform at a minimum level of writing proficiency as measured by Postal Service Exam 750.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: 1 year of experience editing correspondence for technical and substantive compliance with agency/departmental correspondence management policies.

Summary:
Current seeks an advanced undergraduate or graduate student in journalism to research and report on issues affecting public media in the United States. Successful candidates will have strong writing skills; an interest in thinking analytically about media and how it is funded, created and distributed; and the ability to collaborate on various aspects of news reporting and publishing.
Current is an independent news service covering public media, including NPR, PBS, and stations. We operate a website and publish a quarterly print publication. Our editorial interns research, report, and write their own stories with support from Current's editors and reporters. Many have gone on to successful internships and professional jobs at other news organizations.
Essential Functions:
* Research, report, and write original coverage. Gather information and multiple perspectives for news reporting through interviews, analysis, reading, observation and events. Check facts, spellings, numbers, and assumptions to confirm details of news events. Produce timely and valuable material for digital coverage and report on developing stories.
* Revise work in progress and collaborate with editors in preparing coverage for online publication. Advise editors on art direction by collecting photos, artwork and graphics and identifying opportunities for presenting data and multimedia elements.
* Work with Current staff on production, planning, and discussion. Develop and pitch story ideas. Produce social media posts sharing links to Current's news articles, adhering to Current's editorial practices. Collaborate with the digital editor and the managing editor in responding to reader reactions.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
* Part-time.

* 20 hours per week.
* Jan 12, 2026 - May 8, 2026; 15-20 hours per week (exact dates and daily work schedule to be determined).
Salary Range:
* $17.95 - $25.00 per hour (commensurate with experience).
Required Education and Experience:
* Junior, senior, or graduate-level journalism coursework. For undergraduates, this includes COMM-320 (Reporting).
* As of fall 2025, a junior, senior, or graduate student with a major in American University's School of Communications and a minimum overall 3.25 GPA. Graduate students must have completed their first semester of study to be considered for this internship.
* Experience reporting in-depth stories or analyses for coursework, student journalism organizations, or previous editorial internships.
* Familiarity with the WordPress content management system.
* Analytical, quantitative, and writing skills.
* Interest in journalism, public media, the media business, and/or public policy.
