**Position Title:** Apprentice/Journeyman System Protection Technician (Relay Technician) (DOT-FMCSA) **OPEN UNTIL FILLED** **Department/Location:** Office of Chief Ops Officer/Williston, ND **Company:** Basin Electric Power Cooperative Assist in the operation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of high voltage system protection equipment and schemes. This includes but is not limited to, electromechanical relays, solid state relays, programmable relays, networks, power-line carrier, tone equipment, digital fault recorders, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), and ancillary equipment used in high voltage substations. This position requires a willingness to learn, develop technical skills, and stay informed about evolving technologies in the field. **This position is identified as a Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) related position, which may allow physical and/or logical access to Bulk Electric System (BES) cyber related assets or systems.** **Essential Functions:** + Complete on-the-job training and assigned academic work to become proficient in the maintenance and repair of system protection equipment. + Assist journeyman in operating and maintaining assigned equipment. + Operate, maintain, test, and inspect the Transmission System Maintenance (TSM) system protection equipment and related equipment. Equipment responsibilities include protective relaying, metering, disturbance monitoring, annunciator, SCADA, power line carrier, tone equipment, and auto-generation control (AGC) in power plants. This equipment is normally in Basin Electric Power Cooperative (BEPC) substations, switchyards, and power plants in the BEPC service area, but can also include facilities and equipment not owned by BEPC, which is contracted for maintenance services. + Commission new equipment in new or existing facilities to provide the best possible assurance that the equipment is ready for service and will perform its designed functions. + Complete the appropriate test forms, reports, timecards, mileage logs, receiving reports, and all other assigned and required paperwork for submission to the appropriate personnel. + Maintain assigned vehicles, equipment, tools, and assist other trades in operating and maintaining the assigned TSM shops and adjoining BEPC property. + Attain proficiency in securing outages for equipment; determining the proper clearance points; taking switching orders; and properly tagging and grounding equipment, as required, for general switching, equipment clearances, and hot line holds. **Qualifications:** **System Protection Technician Apprentice:** + Associates' degree in Electronic Technology, or a related field, preferably a substation specialized program. + Must complete the apprentice training program within the first four years of employment to obtain the qualifications necessary to be a System Protection Journeyman. **System Protection Technician Journeyman:** + Associates' degree in Electronic Technology, or a related field, preferably a substation specialized program, and an accredited System Protection apprenticeship program which includes four years of industry experience; or + High school diploma or equivalent (GED or HSED); and six years of extra high voltage (EHV) experience as a System Protection Technician. + One year experience with Basin Electric's system. + Able to work with minimal supervision and provide work direction. + Able to learn and understand vector mathematics. **Other Requirements:** + Knowledge of computers, electronic and electrical theory and its applications, electrical blueprint reading, electronic schematic reading, and a mechanical aptitude. + Knowledge of networking and troubleshooting skills. + Able to learn and understand vector mathematics and must be competent in analyzing and troubleshooting solid-state circuits to the component level. + Proficient with computers, including Microsoft Word and Outlook. + A valid driver's license in the state of residence. + This is a Department of Transportation (DOT) (FMCSA) (non-CDL) qualified position. + Resume required. + The above statements are intended to describe the nature and level of work being performed in this job. The first section below outlines the essential job functions of the Electrician job. Electricians must be able to perform these functions, with or without a reasonable accommodation. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS : **Duties and Responsibilities:** + Install new equipment and assist outside vendors with new equipment installation and repair. + Ensure all work is completed in accordance with the National Electric Codes and OSHA. + Install single and 3-phase electrical circuits. + Install conduit and electrical panels. + Troubleshoot plant equipment consisting of burner controls, conveyor controls, HVAC systems, robots, hydraulics and other mechanical and electrical systems. + Make required alterations/modifications to equipment and systems. + Use Programmable Logic Controllers for troubleshooting. + Perform facility maintenance projects as assigned. + Perform repairs and preventative maintenance on systems, machinery, and equipment + Accurately complete paperwork required for maintenance records. + Follow all safety rules and regulations strictly and maintain a clean and orderly work area. + Participate in continuous improvement process. + Perform duties assigned by Supervisor/Lead. + Ability and willingness to work overtime as required and mandated by production schedules; "on-call" duty may be required over holidays and weekends. **Physical Requirements:** + Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and push/pull up to 100 lbs. + Ability to bend, twist, turn, kneel, squat, and climb. + Stand and walk up to eight hours per day. + Work safely around moving equipment, power tools, and industrial vehicles. _It may be necessary to perform any of these functions up to twelve hours a day._ SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE: + High School diploma or GED required. + AA or Technical Degree Required 2 yr. minimum. + Understanding of National Electric Codes. + Two years electrical experience in a manufacturing environment. + Display communication and leadership skills, both written and verbally. **Base Pay Range:** $24.06 - $28.75 Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. Visa sponsorship will not be provided.
