Qualifications
Must possess competence in the following areas in order to perform this role in a safe, productive and effective manner:
Interprets drawings, sketches, plans and determines best work procedures, tools, equipment needed to troubleshoot and repair problems
Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles and installs electrical conduit; weld supports; install cable and duct banks; make terminations

Are you an experienced Industrial Electrician seeking a challenging role in an essential public infrastructure environment? Join Pima County's Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department (RWRD), where you will apply journeyman-level expertise in industrial electrical maintenance, troubleshooting, construction, and preventive maintenance to support essential wastewater treatment operations.
This role focuses on the safe installation, repair, diagnosis, and modernization of complex electrical systems operating across high-voltage (46 kV), medium-voltage (4160 VAC), and low-voltage (480 VAC and 240/120 VAC) power systems. You will work on critical infrastructure including motors, motor controls, VFDs, PLCs, switchgear, transformers, generators, and transfer switches, while supporting SCADA and PLC-based control systems to ensure reliable monitoring, control, and automation of plant operations. All work is performed in compliance with NFPA 70 (NEC), NFPA 70E, OSHA, and County safety standards, with a strong emphasis on safety, system reliability, and service to the community.
Essential Functions:
As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, this classification may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. Recommends electrical system requirements for facilities and conducts technical inspections on new installations of electrical systems, modifications of existing equipment, motors, and related electrically-operated apparatus;
Determines routing, location, and method of installing industrial wiring, conduits, equipment, fixtures, and accessories from complex industrial drawings, wiring diagrams, blueprints, specifications, and sketches;
Operates and maintains medium voltage (15kV) substations including protective relays and controls;
Tests, calibrates, and programs breaker trip settings and functions;
Performs scheduled inspections and reviews of electrical panels, performs proper preventative maintenance on all associated electrical equipment, and upgrades electrical equipment;
Identifies and documents all electrical enclosures and electrical equipment within facilities and maintains accurate labeling in all panels, motor control centers (MCCs), junction boxes, and switch gear;
Follows proper safety protocols on electrical equipment;
Prepares work schedules and coordinates maintenance schedules with integrated teams;
Prepares technical reports of electrical operational issues;
Performs calculations involved in the operation of sizing electrical circuits, transformers, uninterruptable power supply (UPS) units, panels, breakers, starters, box and conduit fill and wire sizes;
May oversee and consult with outside electrical and construction contractors to assure compliance with National Electrical Codes and Regulations (NEC) and Pima County specifications, rules, policies, and regulations;
Responds to electrical emergencies.
Minimum Qualifications:
Completion of an industry-recognized electrical apprenticeship program AND three years of journey-level industrial experience as an electrician maintaining industrial electrical systems and distribution lines of at least 480V.
(Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.)
OR:
Five years of journey-level industrial experience as an electrician maintaining industrial electrical systems and distribution lines of at least 480V.

Minimum three (3) years of experience applying electrical safety practices in accordance with NFPA 70E, OSHA regulations, and established lockout/tagout and arc-flash safety procedures in industrial environments.

Introduction: This role of Industrial Electrician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment within an industrial environment. This includes working with high and low voltage systems, motors, control panels, circuit breakers, wiring, and electrical machinery. This role requires troubleshooting and diagnosing electrical malfunctions, ensuring safe and efficient operation of all electrical systems. The Industrial Electrician will work closely with other maintenance staff and production teams to minimize downtime and maintain a safe working environment, while adhering to all safety regulations and company standards.
Responsibilities for Industrial Electrician:
* Adheres to and promotes all safety guidelines and company standards.
* Daily visual inspections of plant and mobile equipment to check mechanical operative readiness, including electrical systems, motors, control panels, electrical wiring, and circuit breakers.
* Ensures operation of machinery and electrical equipment by completing preventative maintenance requirements on motors, transformers, electrical panels, circuit boards, power distribution systems, and electrical wiring; following diagrams, sketches, operations manuals, manufacturer's instructions, and engineering specifications; troubleshooting electrical malfunctions.
* Locates sources of electrical problems by observing devices in operation, listening for issues, using precision measuring and testing instruments such as multimeters, insulation testers, and voltage testers.
* Removes defective electrical components and wiring by dismantling electrical devices; using electricians' tools, hoists, crane, hand and power tools; examining form and texture of parts.
* Repairs electrical machinery and equipment through the use of the appropriate methods; troubleshooting electrical circuits, rewiring, replacing electrical parts, repairing circuit boards, and diagnosing electrical control systems.
* Controls downtime by informing production workers of routine electrical maintenance; monitoring compliance.
* Installs, modifies, and repairs wiring, circuits, and electrical components in machinery and production equipment.
* Maintains electrical equipment, parts, and supply inventories by checking stock and communicating shortages to manager.
* Conserves maintenance resources by using equipment, parts, and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
* Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations; uses lockout/tagout procedures, electrical safety practices, and ensures electrical systems are properly shut off before maintenance.
* Responsible for entry and maintenance in confined space and permit space enclosures; follows all Confined Space Restrictions, policies, and procedures; wears respirators when required; works in constricted environments.
* Provides electrical maintenance information by answering questions and requests.
* Documents all repairs, preventative maintenance, and inspections related to electrical systems.
Qualifications
* High School education or equivalent
* Completion of an Electrical Apprenticeship program or equivalent industrial electrical training
* Advanced knowledge of electrical systems, including high and low voltage systems, industrial control systems, PLCs, and motor control centers
* Basic knowledge of Hydraulics, Pneumatics, Electrical (high and low voltage), Electrical troubleshooting, Control systems, Welding, Cutting, Fabrication, and General Mechanics
* Knowledge of forklift operations
* Ability to record data for maintenance records
* Ability to work with others in all phases of manufacturing

Monitors streetlights to identify downed poles, inoperative lights or other situations requiring resolution or to report problems to property entities. This Merit Promotion position is open to Current Federal Employees and Former Federal Employees with permanent status or reinstatement eligibility. 1.Installs, modifies, maintains, repairs, troubleshoots, and tests circuits, systems, associated fixtures, controls, and equipment of secondary power distribution lines and circuits used to supply a wide range of voltage, amperage, phase, and frequency requirements to distribution panels, switchgear, power and control circuits, fire detection and suppression systems, security alarms, lightning protection systems, and electronic monitoring systems.
2.Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals. Plans and lays out the routing, placement type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls that support industrial operations, computer complexes, or similar complex electrical loads. Traces hard-to-locate defects or problems associated with the completion of repairs and installations. Determines and places distribution panels, boxes, fittings, and connections and install wiring, couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers, and other electrical devices including electrical service entrances.
3.Conduct training for other employees in the preventive maintenance, electrical safety, and servicing of all electrical systems and equipment. Identifies and communicates opportunities for improvement, cost savings, productivity/efficiency improvements and safety improvements.
4.Collaborates with architects and engineers to identify discrepancies between blueprints and on-site conditions, ensuring accurate project execution. Works with projects teams to ensure projects were completed on schedule and within budget.
5.Designs and development of various electrical systems and controllers. Performs site audits and inspections. Engages in all phases of new product introduction, including concept. Incumbent troubleshoots, repairs, and conducts preventive maintenance on motor control centers. Performs preventive maintenance as scheduled or required on electrical equipment as recommended by the manufacturer and on site safety programs. Ensures all work meets prescribed standards of quality and ensures compliance with all laws, safety procedures, policies and codes. Inspects electrical systems, equipment, or components to identify hazards, defects, or the need for adjustment or repair. Monitors performance of equipment and informs management of any potential problems. Interprets and applies the National Electrical Code, local codes, etc., and uses trade formulas to calculate common properties.

Must have a valid drivers' license and be able to operate a vehicle on a narrow, steep, unpaved mountain road.
Physical requirements: Repairs and installations are made from ladders, scaffolding, platforms and other hard-to-reach places. This requires the employee to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The work requires frequently lifting and carrying of tools, equipment and parts that weigh up to 20 pounds and occasionally up to 40 pounds.
As part of medical surveillance programs, the incumbent may be required to take medical examinations to assess his/her medical
qualifications for the position of Electrician.
Working conditions: The work is performed both inside and outside. The Electrician is sometimes required to make repairs and installations in bad weather and work in areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty, and greasy on scaffolding or cranes at heights of 30 feet or more and in close quarters such as manholes and attics. There is exposure to the possibility of injury from falling, electrical shock, burns, and injuries from rotary devices such as electrical motors and is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises.
