About the Position
The Journeyman Mason provides support to all Foundation operations for high level masonry skills in the alteration, construction, and/or repair of 18th century and modern buildings and reconstructed buildings, support buildings and building and landscape components; such as steps, brick walks, walls, chimney's, fireplaces, plaster, ceramic tile, etc.
Main Duties:
Provides high level masonry skills using 18th century techniques and hand tools to repair, alter, or construct buildings, walls, walks, chimneys and steps.
Ensures proper use of power tools where permitted.
Completes tasks related to work layout, site preparation, selective removal of existing material, flashing, stairs, walls, chimneys, walks, preservation of original and reproduction work; integrate installation of plumbing, wiring, heating, and air conditioning.
Ensures safe operation of grinders, saw, chisels, scaffolding, and vibrating compactors acquired by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation for use in the masonry trade operation.
Supports Facilities Maintenance, Museums, and various other departments throughout the Foundation.•Uses non-electric hand tools when necessary to perform work to meet Colonial Williamsburg's quality and historical standards.
Provides maintenance of all shop machinery and masonry storage areas (as assigned by the foreman), general housekeeping, and other related tasks.
Identifies and acts on safety hazards within the shop and other areas throughout the Foundation.
Interacts with customers to ensure satisfaction with costs, timeliness and quality of the job.•Provides on-the-job training, education, and teaching to trainees or interns assigned and assumes a mentor role when requested.
This position requires availability to be on call/callback and to work nights, weekends or shift work as required by Foreman. On call duties require responding to after hours, weekend, and holiday work needs.
This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.
Required Education and Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent required.
Must have 5 years of masonry experience or related experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Masonry experience specific to restoration repairs at museums, historic sites, colleges and/or universities, with the National Park Service, or a similar organization engaged in building preservation and/or maintenance.
Associates of Applied Science degree in masonry or building preservation from an accredited technical or trade school.

Joins pipe by use of screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent, and caulks joints, fills pipe system with water or air and reads pressure gauges to determine whether system is leaking, installs and repairs plumbing fixtures, such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, and water softeners.
Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets, mending burst pipes, and opening clogged drains, and may weld holding fixtures to steel structural members.

Ability to obtain an Interim Secret clearance prior to start.

Summary/Objective:
Works day-to-day assisting Journeymen with the layout, assembly, installation, and repair of pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, air, gas, and drainage systems, according to company standards, specifications and plumbing or mechanical codes.
Essential Functions:
* Cuts or drills holes in walls to permit passage of pipes
* Selects specified type and size of pipe as directed
* Mounts pipe hangers and brackets on walls and ceiling to hold pipe
* Cleans copper
* Loads, transports, unloads and furnishes more experienced mechanics materials, tools, equipment and supplies
* Assists in cleaning work areas and the restocking of supplies and material
* Assists in the lifting, positioning and securing of materials and work pieces during installation
* Focuses on safety and safety practices first and foremost at all task inceptions including safe use of power and hand tools
* Performs other duties as assigned

Required:
* 1 - 3 years plumbing knowledge/experience in a construction/industrial environment and/or equivalent combination of vocational training and experience

**Responsibilities:**

+ Knowledge in safe and professional testing of piping systems for leaks by increasing pressure in pipes and observing gauges attached to pipes for indication of leaks.
+ Observes and complies with all safety and project rules and all company policies and procedures.
+ Has working knowledge of working around heavy machinery to include hydraulic and lattice cranes.
+ Ability to rig and signal loads as required.
+ Ability to set and align process equipment like pumps and blowers.
+ Conducts field layout of the piping system and calculates offsets, miters, and fittings as required.

The employee must possess sufficient physical dexterity and balance to work safely at various heights and in confined spaces. Adequate hearing (with or without assistive devices) is required to understand instructions and warnings in a noisy environment.

Scope of Work:
The Plumber, Maintenance assembles, installs and repairs pipes, fittings and fixtures of heating, water, and drainage systems at FASTC, according to specifications and plumbing codes.
Responsibilities:
* Studies building plans and working drawings to determine work aids required, and sequence of installations.
* Inspects structure to ascertain obstructions to be avoided to prevent weakening of structure resulting from installation of pipe and locates and marks position of pipe and pipe connections and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors.
* Cuts openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings, using hand tools and power tools, cuts and threads pipe, using pipe cutters, cutting torch, and pipe-threading machine, bends pipe to required angle by use of pipe-bending machine, or by placing pipe over block and bending it by hand.
* Assembles and installs valves, pipefittings, and pipes composed of metals, such as iron, steel, brass and lead, and nonmetals, such as glass, vitrified clay, and plastic.
* Joins pipe by use of screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent, and caulks joints, fills pipe system with water or air and reads pressure gauges to determine whether system is leaking, installs and repairs plumbing fixtures, such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, and water softeners.
* Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets, mending burst pipes, and opening clogged drains, and may weld holding fixtures to steel structural members.
* Adhere to company policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
* Ability to obtain an Interim Secret clearance prior to start.
* Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance.
* In general, the work of the plumber requires rounded training and experience usually acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.
* Journeyman Plumbers license for the state of Virginia or reciprocity state.
* Four (4) years' experience as a journeyman.
* Backflow certification preferred.
* Has responsibility of being available on twenty-four (24) hour call to facilitate emergency repairs to equipment that is critical to operation.
* Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license and a safe driving record, in accordance with company policy, to operate vehicles or equipment as required for the position.
Physical Demands / Work Environment:
* Physical Effort and Working Conditions: In performing the required work, it is required to have the ability to climb ladders and scaffolding, do a lot of walking, use every kind of hand tool, work in hazardous positions, carry heavy tools, (maximum 100 pounds), and knock holes in concrete may be subject to electrical shock, burns and injuries to the eye and lungs from refrigerant gases, quick variations of temperature, exposure to acids and fumes, falls, cuts and bruises from hand tools and by working in cramped quarters.
* Must be able to perform duties under adverse weather conditions (extreme cold / heat, etc.). Outside work in winter, summer, rain, sleet, and snow and on uneven terrain - side hills and slopes.
* Must be able to work alternate and extended shift schedules when necessary to meet the customer's mission requirements, including weekends and holidays.
* Must be able to perform on-call duties when necessary and report to work within the required timeframe from notification.
