Job Title: Laborer (Hillman) Craft: Pipe Reports to: Foreman Exempt Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly) Objective/Description: Performs a variety of manual construction tasks involving pipe work for roads, highways and heavy construction projects under the direction of a crew foreman. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Cut, measure, and hook pipes. Support the pipe installation process by supplying materials, tools and equipment to the trench Assist with pre-assembly of pipe on the top of the hill Mix mortar and concrete for manholes Load, unload, or distribute materials, machinery, or tools to and from designated locations Use picks, shovels, and rakes to level earth or asphalt to grade specifications Position or dismantle forms for pouring concrete, using saws, hammers, nails or bolts Tends pumps, compressors, or generators Signal operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment and movement of materials May operate a variety of power and hand tools: air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, mechanical hoists, surveying, measuring and other equipment Maintain clean work area by disposing of trash and debris properly. Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment. Promote and adhere to the company's safety program. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Able to operate a variety of tools/equipment such as hand tools and power tools Able to listen, follow directions, and have a willingness to continue to enhance skills Able to communicate effectively with jobsite supervisor and co-workers General knowledge of road construction processes. Demonstrate a safety first attitude. Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures. Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public Ability to work nights and weekends when necessary Must have reliable transportation, and ability to travel to assigned worksites. Physical Demands: Constant physical effort, including extended standing for at least 8 hour shift Intermittent sitting; continuous walking on construction site. Climb intermittently Regularly twist, bend, stoop, kneel, push/pull and crouch to perform duties Regularly reach above shoulder level Able to repetitively lift and carry at least 75 pounds on a regular basis, and sometimes heavier weight. Agility, balance, and manual dexterity, as well as arm-hand steadiness Able to hear and respond to oral instructions in a noisy environment. Regularly use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; reach and grasp. Excellent hand, eye and foot coordination. Good vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus Education / Experience: High School diploma or general education degree (GED) Two (2) years recent experience working as Hillman (road construction), or equivalent experience. Active Driver's license Work Environment: Regularly works in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and humidity. Frequently works near heavy equipment and moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions and vibration. Work may involve exposure to a variety of substances found on construction site such as oil, grease, gasoline, concrete and diesel fuel. Periodically exposed to fumes, lubricants, airborne particles and dust. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Performs all job-related tasks safely and efficiently and uses all tools and equipment in accordance with company safety policy.
