The Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) was founded in 1886 through the efforts of two distinguished rabbis, Doctor Sabato Morais and Doctor H. Pereira Mendes, along with a group of prominent lay leaders from Sephardic congregations in Philadelphia and New York.

In 1887, JTS held its first class of ten students in the vestry of the Spanish-Portuguese Synagogue, New York City’s oldest congregation.

1962

The present campus which is located at 14-18 West Avenue, Constant Spring, Kingston 8, was purchased in 1962.

1997

A lawsuit dropout in Roseville: In 1997, Isaias and Rhonda Herrera bought a 3-year-old home in a JTS project in Roseville.

1999

The most recent expansion occurred in 1999 with the acquisition of a two-acre property to the south of 14-18 West Avenue.

2002

Uninsulated attic in Elk Grove: In the summer of 2002, Laura and Cesar Gamez bought a used, low-energy house in JTS' Silver Springs project near Elk Grove.
