Position Summary The Staff Attorney provides direct legal representation and advocacy to low-income individuals and families facing housing instability. The role focuses on eviction defense, housing rights, and related civil legal matters, working closely with internal staff and community partners to deliver holistic, trauma-informed legal services. Key Responsibilities Represent clients in housing-related matters, including eviction defense, unlawful detainers, habitability issues, foreclosure prevention, and housing subsidy terminations. Advise and represent clients on public benefits and related civil legal issues impacting housing stability. Conduct client intake, case assessments, strategy development, and case management. Appear in court, administrative hearings, mediations, and negotiations. Collaborate with case managers, social service providers, and community partners. Lead or participate in legal clinics and know-your-rights presentations. Maintain accurate case records and reporting in compliance with program and grant requirements. Identify systemic issues and contribute to policy advocacy or impact efforts as appropriate. Qualifications Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school. Admission to the state bar (or ability to obtain admission within a specified timeframe). Commitment to public interest law and serving low-income or marginalized communities. Experience or strong interest in housing law, eviction defense, or homelessness prevention. Strong legal research, writing, advocacy, and case management skills. Ability to work effectively with clients experiencing trauma and complex life circumstances. Preferred Qualifications Experience in legal aid, nonprofit, or public sector settings. Familiarity with housing subsidies and fair housing laws. Bilingual or multilingual skills relevant to the communities served. The Network is a fiscally sponsored organization of TSNE (tsne.org). Responsibilities Law clerks assist attorneys with providing legal technical assistance and developing tools and educational materials on public health law topics, with primary focus areas varying by region/project. The Harm Reduction Legal Project (the Project) Law Clerk will focus on our work addressing legal and policy barriers that impede the establishment and expansion of evidence-based harm reduction measures such as naloxone distribution, syringe access programs, and access to evidence-based substance use disorder treatment. The Project provides guidance and consultation to governmental and nongovernmental organizations as well as impacted individuals to assist them in navigating the often extremely confusing maze of existing laws and regulations that hamper harm reduction initiatives. The Project also creates non-partisan, evidence-based publications and training regarding the state of laws impacting individuals who use drugs, individuals in recovery, and their communities, as well as research regarding the impact of those laws. The position will consist of research, legal analysis, and strategic guidance to a) providers attempting to operate within existing laws and b) advocates seeking to modify or remove legal restrictions on harm reduction initiatives. This internship is open to law students pursuing a J.D. (or equivalent) capable of performing staff-level work under minimal supervision. The internship is intended for students seeking academic course credit, and all credit arrangements must be handled directly between the student and their university. IDRA will provide supervision, engage in mentorship, and complete all required institutional documentation to support the student throughout the internship. Intern Responsibilities Education law clerks support the work of IDRA's legal and policy, advocacy and community engagement teams. Under the supervision of the Chief Legal Analyst, interns may: Research and draft analyses of developments in education law Assist with preparing amicus briefs, legal advocacy letters and other legal communications Participate in internal and external strategy sessions for civil rights litigation Support the drafting of legal complaints related to education justice Contribute to investigations of civil rights concerns in K-12 and higher education Conduct research related to school discipline, censorship, immigrant student rights, harassment and bullying and other civil rights issues Assist with advocacy projects, policy review and community engagement efforts Participate in team meetings, strategy discussions and project planning Complete administrative or project coordination tasks as needed Project assignments are matched to the intern's strengths, interests and academic goals, as well as IDRA's ongoing legal needs.
