John Andrus was born in 1841 in Pleasantville, New York, graduated from Wesleyan University and soon moved from teaching school to pursuing his talents as a an investor and a businessman.
A devoted family man with nine children, he founded the Julia Dyckman Andrus Memorial in 1923 by establishing the old Dyckman farm in Yonkers as an orphanage, a tribute to his beloved wife who was orphaned as a child.
Originally founded in 1928 by John E. Andrus in memory of his wife, Julia, as an orphanage for needy youngsters, Andrus now provides a broad network of supports to vulnerable children and families of all backgrounds and means.
However, by the time of his death at the age of 93 in 1934, he held office as both Mayor of Yonkers and United States Congressman, and gained a reputation as an industrialist and as one of New York’s most caring philanthropists.
In 1940, Farmer and Housewife were the top reported jobs for men and women in the USA named Andrus.
The orphanage was later joined in 1953 by an adjacent retirement home, the John E. Andrus Memorial.
An Andrus-sponsored study of foster children in the 1970’s inspired the launch of the Orchard School, which added academics, and clinical services for children with special needs, to the residential program.
In 1986, Jim’s brother, Bill Andrus, who had been driving truck for many years, became a business partner.
Andrus Transportation moved the corporate office in 1988 to St George, Utah and a repair shop was established a few miles away.
Founded by him in 1995, the Andrus Center for Public Policy is dedicated to perpetuating his common sense, problem-solving approach.
His background in renovation, restoration and preservation gave him focus when he founded Andrus Corporation in 1998.
The Andrus Family Fund, a sub-fund of the Surdna Foundation, was established in 2000 to give fifth generation family members between the ages of twenty-five and forty-five an opportunity to learn about and participate in organized philanthropy.
Jimmy Stewart joined the Andrus Corporation team in June of 2008, coming from a background in commercial and residential tile.
In October 2010, James R. Andrus (Jimmy), one of Jim and Mary’s children, was promoted to President of Andrus Transportation.
In April, 2011, Bill Andrus passed away after a lingering illness.
