Duties & Responsibilities

Responsibilities include working closely with other engineers in the development of electrical construction documents for water/wastewater, technology facilities, rapid transit, port facilities, industrial plants, and electronic surveillance system projects. Duties include development of electrical calculations, engineering studies, computer modeling, construction plans, and technical specifications, in addition to construction supervision and follow-up.

**What You'll Get to Do:**

You will work with a dynamic team of ship Naval Marine, Mechanical, Electrical, Structural Engineers, and Naval Architects providing our NAVSEA/NSWC/MSC Technical and Program Office clients with expert technical support in developing the next Navy ships. You will perform key engineering tasking on programs as broad as the Navy's fleet - supporting aircraft carriers, combatants, amphibious and auxiliary ships from program initiation through concept, design, construction, life cycle, and fleet support. You will support engineering efforts across various ship design programs. You will work with multidisciplinary teammates, systems engineering managers, electrical managers, SMEs utilizing the best practices for shipboard electrical generation, propulsion and distribution systems, including machinery control and propulsion control systems for both new construction and fleet modernization programs. As a Junior Naval Electrical Engineer, you will become current and stay current in modern ship design requirements, analysis, emerging technologies, from traditional CAD and Excel analyses to digital engineering and modeling methods.

The Primary Focus for this role is to learn and provide technical support for electrical technical areas including but not limited to Main and Auxiliary Diesel and Gas Turbine Generators, Integrated Electrical Plants (hybrid and full), Low Voltage AC and DC, and Medium Voltage AC Electrical Plants, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Electrical Plant Load Analyses (EPLA), One-Line Diagrams, Power Load Flow, Harmonic Power Quality, Transient System and Fault Current Analyses, Circuit Breaker Protective Coordination Studies, Machinery Centralized Control Systems (MCCS), and Electric Propulsion Control Systems.

**More About the Role:**

+ Ensures that NAVSEA/NSWC/MSC Clients, Systems Engineering Managers, Task Leads, and internal customers receive accurate technical advice in a timely fashion

+ Performs electrical feasibility and selection for design in electrical systems with generators, motors, variable frequency drives, transformers, uninterruptable power systems (UPS), control panels, HVAC controls, lighting systems, surveillance and communication systems, cables, timers, circuit breakers, power panels, batteries, relays, and other electrical components

+ Work with and create one-line diagrams, electrical plant load analysis (EPLA), utilizing load factors, power factors, and power factor correction (leading and lagging)

+ Determine root cause failures and correct them

+ Ship-check military and commercial vessels' electrical wiring, for repair and redesign tasks as well as electromechanical-system troubleshooting

+ Write customer system specific installation and operator maintenance manuals which include detailed drawings, test plans and procedures

+ Provide regulatory interpretations that translate into technical requirements which can be understood by contractors and field personnel

+ Ability to support specific areas in proposals and willingness to learn larger proposal support efforts

+ Self-Starter, Multi-task capability, technically savvy, interpersonal skills, team player, exceptional attention to detail with the ability to work under pressure for quick-reaction projects

+ Ability to gain Knowledge of ABS MVR/NVR, USCG, SOLAS, NAVY SPECs (e.g., DDS, DOD-HDBK, NSTM, TPUBs, MIL-STD) and Commercial Specs (e.g., IEEE, ANSI/ASTM)

**You'll Bring These Qualifications:**

+ BS Degree in Electrical Engineering, or marine engineering; or similar background and/or specialized such as significant US Navy training with an Associate's degree will be accepted in lieu of Bachelor's degree

+ US Citizen with the ability to obtain a Secret Security Clearance

+ 1-4 years of experience in US Naval Ship Engineering, either within the NAVSEA/PEO Governmental Organizations, Shipyard Construction and Repair, Ship Operations (as a USCG Certified Officer or US Naval Officer), NAVSEA contractor support, or similar electrical power systems experience.

+ Strong verbal and written communication skills with complex technical issues. The ability to create graphical representations and PowerPoints

+ Strong analytical skills

+ Willingness to travel 10% of the time with a current Passport

+ Capable of perform design shipchecks onboard MSC and Navy ships

+ Ability to become proficient in designing electrical rip-out and install drawings, including bill of materials creation in AutoCAD software as the COG design engineer

**These Qualifications Would be Nice to Have:**

+ Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification desirable

+ Proficiency with AutoCAD, NAVISWORKS and SKM Power Tools

+ Familiar with Machinery Control Systems and PLC/HMI/Automation/Controls

+ Shipboard and/or shipyard experience

+ Other Professional Qualifications/Degrees
