Production floors are a platform from which productions are drilled and/or manufactured and also houses a processing plant and other equipment necessary for the proper functioning of the production operation.

Here's how junior manufacturing engineers use production floor:
  • Worked on production floor in machine shop and final assembly.
  • Involved in investigations and providing engineering support for any production floor process non-conformance implementing corrective and preventive action plan.

10. Sigma

In Greek alphabets, sigma is the 18th letter that means "to sum up". In statistics, the lower case symbol of sigma is the unit of measurement for standard deviation which is used to assess the variability in a given set of data. While the upper case symbol is for summation notation means to add up all the given numbers in the data set.

Here's how junior manufacturing engineers use sigma:
  • Participated in Silicon mix usage optimization Lean Six Sigma project, resulting in increased efficiency from 17% to 95%.
  • Executed several Six Sigma tools (measurement system analysis, variation decomposition, and screening experiments) to improve manufacturing processes.

11. Production Processes

Here's how junior manufacturing engineers use production processes:
  • Performed time studies and other kaizen processes that improved overall work methods and efficiencies in the production processes.
  • Recommended and implemented improvements and/or modifications in sequence of operations, equipment utilization and analyze costs associated with production processes.

12. BOM

BOM stands for a bill of materials in design drafting. This list outlines the raw materials, instructions, and components required to manufacture or construct a product or service.

Here's how junior manufacturing engineers use bom:
  • Created and released BOM, AVL, Drawings, MPIs, Travelers, for new and existing products.
  • Implemented ECOs and updated BOMs to reflect product changes.

13. PLC

Here's how junior manufacturing engineers use plc:
  • Optimized automation cycle reliability and production throughput through component redesign, process refinement, and PLC ladder logic troubleshooting and editing.
  • Trained and qualified production operators in the use of new computer numerically controlled machines and specialized PLC controlled assembly equipment.

14. Production Equipment

Production equipment in limited terms is used to define any type of machinery or equipment used in the production of a video or film. Basic production equipment includes a camera, tripod, lighting kit, camera light, short term microphone, light reflector, boom pole, shock mount, audio cables, wireless microphone, headphones, portable digital audio recorder, camera lenses, extra batteries, external hard drive, and DSLR shoulder mount rig.

Here's how junior manufacturing engineers use production equipment:

What junior manufacturing engineer skills would you recommend for someone trying to advance their career?

Dr. Kamran AbediniDr. Kamran Abedini LinkedIn profile

Professor and Chairman, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona

First of all, I do not recommend a gap year or any interruptions in education as it could require additional warm-up and setup for starting it again in the future. However, if they "need" to do so, I recommend they at least take one course so that they understand the trend and the expectations of students in an educational environment. For example, in the last couple of semesters, both faculty and students have learned and experienced new methods of virtual learning and assessment. If you just plan on coming to school after a few semesters, you would be highly surprised by the changes, taking you much time to prepare, and it would cause falling behind your coursework.

What type of skills will young junior manufacturing engineers need?
