Junior networking engineer job description

1. Maintain data, voice and/or video network hardware and systems;

2. Assess and update older networks as needed and in accordance with specified plans.

3. Provide escalated Tier-2 and Tier-3 technical support on data, voice or video networks;

4. Answer technical questions; recommend and Implement approved course of action.

5. Install network applications on network servers or voice equipment; Maintain, test, research and resolve problems.

6. May design, implement or maintain various networks such as LAN, CAN, and voice systems in accordance with specified requirements.

7. May prepare data or voice network diagrams and drawings to document and assist in communicating current operational status of networks.

8. Perform data of voice network configurations and configuration changes of various voice or data equipment such as routers, switches, intelligent hubs, multi-function switches, end offices, signaling transfer points, PBX, voice mail, call management systems, etc. to enhance performance

9. Experience with installation, configuration, and maintenance of McAfee version 7 & 8 Sidewinder Firewalls,

10. Understand the operation of network protocols and Firewall packet and proxy filters

11. May be responsible for the configuration, deployment, and management of our customer's next generation firewall solution.

Required Skills, Experience, and Education:

Four (4) years of experience in programs and contracts of similar scope, type, and complexity are required. Associate's degree in engineering technology from an accredited college is required. Two (2) years of additional network engineering experience may be substituted for an Associate's degree. Certifications: An IAT level II baseline certification as defined by DoD 8570.01-M is required. CCNA, or equivalent, certification or higher required. Both certifications are REQUIRED for this position.

1. Must be able to lift 50lbs.

2. Must be able to drive company vehicle.

3. Must be available to work an 8 hour shift between the hours of 6am-6pm, as determined by management, unless otherwise assigned an alternative shift.

Experience with installation and configuration of any levels of network devices, such as firewalls, switches, routers, cabling, Cisco, Brocade, or Juniper devices is a plus.

* Work in a fast-paced environment, alongside a team of highly specialized Engineers providing engineering and implementations action for integration, modernization, and/or new installs for partner nations and allies in Eastern Europe.
* Familiarity with network equipment, cabling, and installation in datacenter environments.
* Provide operation and integration support for a multi-vendor infrastructure that includes various routers and switches, multiple vendor firewalls, multiple vendor servers.
* Aiding senior engineers and the team with routing and switching support with intermediate understanding of designing, testing, and implementing dynamic routing protocols (both IGP and EGP), core understanding of layer two technologies and concepts, and familiarity with any of the major vendor CLI (Cisco IoS, JunOS, PanOS) environments.
* Be comfortable with the configuration, installation, and management of routers, switches, firewalls, intrusion detection systems, virtual local area networks (VLANs) multi-protocol label switching (MPLS), IP routing protocols (OSPF, BGP, EIGRP), IP multicast and quality of service (QoS) under the direction and guidance of senior engineers and network architects.
* Ensuring proper routing protocols are being applied to optimize the end-to-end network performance from the Local Area Network (LAN) through a Wide Area Network (WAN), to a Campus Area Network (CAN), to a Storage Area Network (SAN), or data center.
* Assist the government/host nation customer with identifying any derived design objectives, technical specifications, performance requirements, and interoperability specifications to ensure the system design will meet stakeholder end-to-end requirements.
* Document networks and changes to systems and all required checklists for use within the configuration baseline.
* Familiarity with network drawing and productivity tools (Visio, Lucid, AutoCad, ect) a must.
* Must have a valid US Passport and be prepared for international travel up to 40% at customer locations in Eastern Europe.

Minimum Qualifications:

Current DoD 8570 IAT Level II certification (CompTIA Security+CE, CCNA Security, CySA+, etc.)

CCENT/CCNA

Other Desired Qualifications:

JNCDA/JNCIA, PCCET/PCNSE

Education: Relevant BS Degree and +2 years of prior relevant experience or HS Diploma + 6 years of prior relevant experience. Specific experience, education and training may be considered in lieu of degree. Desire a military background within Signal, Communications, of Information Technology MOS's.

About the Position

Jane Street's numerous distributed systems are built on an agile, reliable, multi-vendor network infrastructure that supports all traffic profiles from trading to internet connectivity.

We are looking for a Junior Network Engineer who will help us maintain the team's highest level of service and scale our network ahead of our business' demands, while pushing for more standardization through automation.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills will be needed as you collaborate with colleagues across the firm globally. You will find and resolve issues, plan and execute deployments, and improve systems where possible. Getting the details right and keeping good records are critical in this role. Striving to improve the team through documentation and contributing to our monitoring and automation systems is a must.

A typical day in the Network Engineering team includes:

• Working on cross-team projects such as site expansions and new colocation builds, with the help of our project managers
• Interacting with stakeholders to provision new market data feeds and connections to third parties
• Contributing to support tasks and actively taking steps to improve the team's ability to monitor the network effectively, through scripting and/or conveying requirements to our dedicated developers

• Experience working across LAN and WAN networks
• Experience with routing and network protocols (OSPF, BGP, PIM-SM)
• Experience troubleshooting transport protocols (TCP/UDP)
• Experience working with Linux and proficient in a programming language
• Ideally experience with overlay networks (EVPN, VxLAN)
