* Coordinates and manages clinical research by: guiding and coordinating team in the preparation and submission of a portfolio of research proposals as applicable; guiding and coordinating team in the collection, management, analyses, and interpretation of clinical trials data; orchestrating internal resources needed to provide consultation on implementing clinical trials for staff; influencing the development and implementation of policies and procedures for developing research protocols and other processes of clinical trials; overseeing the preparation, submission, and/or compilation of study documentation sent to regulatory bodies (e.g., IRB) for review and approval prior to implementation; may also be responsible for training others to execute clinical trial activities (e.g., informed consent process, lab support and processing, pharmaceutical documentation data, sample processing, adverse event assessment process); and may be involved in training others to support research lab operations(e.g., biological specimen collection, including patient preparation, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, and transportation and storage of specimens).
* Guides research compliance by: leveraging advanced knowledge of clinical trials while planning the effective, long-term design of clinical trial applications to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and KP policies and procedures within unit or team; developing guidance for identifying and resolving compliance and/or quality issues and developing corrective action plans; developing and socializing updates for compliance-monitoring/audit systems and documentation; leading the implementation of new or updated research protocols, procedures, and guidance to ensure confidentiality, privacy, and security of clinical research data; driving the implementation of research protocols, procedures and guidance to ensure confidentiality, privacy, and security of clinical research data within unit; and overseeing and advising team members who are providing guidance and partnering with investigators and other key stakeholders to ensure compliance with IRB approved protocols and local and federal guidelines.
* Manages internal and external working relationships by: developing effective team building with research stakeholders and investigators within and across unit; serving as a major point of within-unit contact for key contractors and subcontractors, study sponsors, collaborating internal and/or external clinical sites, and data coordinating centers; and developing materials and guiding the education of staff and/or participants on protocols, documentation procedures, clinical best practices, or timeliness of submissions.
* Ensures documentation of clinical research files by: coordinating the teams progress on the timeliness, accuracy, and completion of documentation of all research activities (e.g., consent forms, reports, tracking forms); driving the application of strategies to determine the best course for developing quality control and/or assurance measures and providing feedback to research staff and management; assessing volunteers and/or patients for eligibility to participate in Clinical Trials, defining issues and developing solutions for resolving complex escalations when necessary; and managing teams efforts while monitoring and auditing Clinical Trials across sites and presenting findings to KP leadership.

The RN is engaged in Scripps Memorial La Jolla's 29-bed CVICU and provides patient care on shifts they are not the CCT RN in order to maintain clinical proficiencies and patient management experience. The CVICU specializes in caring for acute patients with a variety of disease states. As a destination center for higher level of cardiac care in Southern California, CVICU implements progressive programs and therapies such as:
Cardiac surgery
Heart failure, shock, advanced resuscitation measures
Mechanical circulatory support
ECMO, LVAD, Impella, Tandem Heart, IABP, CRRT
This role is also expected to provide ECMO Specialist services. Focusing on ECMO patients, the ECMO Specialist will practice standards based on the ELSO Guidelines. They will work collaboratively with the ECMO Team including Physicians and Perfusionists.
In addition, the Critical Care Transport / ECMO Specialist / CVICU RN represents the Transport Team as a customer service ambassador for Scripps Health. They maintain a professional demeanor at all times and support hospital units as a resource for education and patient care while not on active transport. Therefore, the ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of experience in ICU, ECMO, cardiac assists devices and advanced ventilation techniques. Experience with critical care transport is preferred.

* Provides services related to monitoring and evaluating plan of care by: coordinating resources and services to assure continuity and quality of care, sharing advanced knowledge with others, and developing strategies; updating authorizations, attending case management rounds with clinicians, and updating diagnoses as needed; contacting own patients periodically to assess progress toward treatment milestones and care plan goals, and beginning to coordinate team members to do the same; identifying barriers to achieving goals and ensuring that they are discussed with the patient and care team thoroughly, and guiding team members doing the same; promoting best practices for verifying that all services remain consistent with established guidelines and standards; and documenting/updating the patients case in all medical files while sharing standards with the team.
* Drives services related to the case-planning process by: creating a client-focused case management plan with treatment goals based on the patients and familys/caregivers needs independently; collaborating independently with health-care team, patient, and caregivers to assure plan of care is safe, agreeable, and appropriate; and validating that the plan is consistent with regulatory, accreditation, and regional guidelines independently, and sharing feedback with team members as needed.
* Supports efforts to remain updated on current research, policies, and procedures by: researching, recommending, and attending pertinent seminars, workshops, and approved educational programs and workshops specific to professional needs; implementing systems, processes, and methods to maintain team knowledge of community resources; monitoring and/or reviewing operational team data and key metrics applied to own work; making suggestions for change or improvement as needed, and helping others to develop ideas as needed; and implementing policy updates to ensure that regulatory requirements are being met.
* Provides services related to patient disposition by: performing daily review for early identification of disposition planning activities; developing, evaluating, coordinating, and communicating a comprehensive disposition plan in collaboration with the patient, family, physician, nurses, social services, and other healthcare providers and agencies to meet each patients personal, psychosocial, economic, and cultural needs independently; and leveraging advanced knowledge to create, obtain, and approve authorizations/approvals as needed for services for the patient.
* Connects patients with existing services by: guiding others to assist patients with gaining access to care based on their needs, integrating or referring them into existing programs/services, and resolving moderately complex issues; referring patients independently to outside entities, ambulatory case managers, care managers, social workers, and/or internal/external resources as appropriate; utilization management for internal case management post acute care services; hospital level of care, post-acute care, skilled nursing facility (SNF), and durable medical equipment (DME), and transition and complex case management and making location-specific adaptations as necessary.
* Serves as liaison between internal and external care by: reviewing benefits/services available based on regulations or specific coverage to patients, families, and other members of the community, problem solving identified concerns, and connecting patients/families with the right entities to assist with benefits/coverage needs; providing case management to a caseload of low- and medium-risk patients referred to external facilities/agencies independently; applying strategies and concepts to independently propose recommendations in interdisciplinary team meetings with internal and/or external stakeholders; and leveraging advanced knowledge to act as a general resource for physicians, health plan administrators, and contracted vendors.
