The Experiential Learning Manager plays a key role in preparing students and alumni for successful, sustainable careers in the creative industries. This position provides individualized career advising to KCAI students and alumni, manages career readiness programming and events, and oversees experiential learning initiatives, including the Sponsored Studio program, Professional Practice Portal, and career fairs. The role is highly collaborative and bridges academic, alumni, and employer networks to ensure students gain real-world experience that supports their artistic development and career goals, ensuring students graduate with the networks, skills, and experiences needed for post-graduate success.
Essential Functional Responsibilities
Advising & Career Preparation:
Provide one-on-one career advising to students and alumni, covering resumes, portfolios, job search strategies, interview preparation, graduate school applications, and networking.
Collaborate with Academic Advising and faculty to support students' professional growth throughout their time at KCAI.
Maintain advising records and track student engagement and progress.
Experiential Learning & Employer Relations:
Serve as the primary liaison between KCAI and employers to develop new experiential learning experiences, including internships, apprenticeships, and project-based collaborations.
Execute daily tasks associated with the Sponsored Studio program, collaborating with faculty and partners to align real-world projects with academic and professional goals.
Manage the Professional Practice Portal, ensuring job and internship listings, student records, and employer information are accurate and up to date.
Cultivate and maintain relationships with local, regional, and national employers, alumni, and industry professionals to expand opportunities for students and alumni.
Career Programming & Events Management:
Plan and implement all Professional Practice Center career readiness events, including workshops, panels, and employer presentations.
Organize both virtual and in-person career fairs to ensure meaningful student-employer engagement.
Coordinate event logistics, contracts, and communications with internal and external partners.
Track attendance and collect post-event feedback to inform future programming.
Outcomes & Assessment:
Provide regular reports on student participation, employer engagement, and alumni involvement to support institutional strategy for post-graduate success.
Track post-graduate employment outcomes and use data to inform advising strategies and programming improvements.
Other:
Support other Advancement, Academic Affairs, and other campus initiatives as needed.

Strong understanding of career development and experiential learning in higher education.

Ability to analyze outcomes data and apply insights to practice.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. for event setup.
Required Experience/Education:
Bachelor's degree required.
Minimum two years of experience in career advising, student services, experiential learning, or related areas.
Experience in employer relations, event planning, or partnership development.
Preferred Experience/Education:
Background in art, design, or creative industries.
Experience in higher education or arts-focused institutions.

The Executive Vice President for Advancement and Strategic Communications serves as a key member of the Kansas City Art Institute's (KCAI) executive leadership team. This senior leader is responsible for unifying and advancing the institution's fundraising and marketing/communications functions. The EVP will design and execute a comprehensive strategy to elevate KCAI's brand, expand its visibility, cultivate strong community and donor relationships, and secure the financial resources necessary to advance the Art Institute's mission and strategic priorities.
This position requires a visionary leader with a deep understanding of fundraising, marketing, and the arts, who can inspire and guide a dynamic team to achieve ambitious goals.
Essential Functional Responsibilities:
Leadership & Strategic Management:
Serve as a trusted advisor to the Nerman Family President, Board of Trustees, and Cabinet by providing data-driven insights, strategic recommendations, and regular reports on advancement and communications performance.
Develop and implement a three-to-five-year integrated advancement and communications plan with clear benchmarks for donor growth, brand visibility, and revenue generation.
Establish KPIs for Advancement and Marketing & Communications staff, ensuring accountability, continuous improvement, and alignment with institutional priorities.
Oversee departmental budgets with transparent financial planning and ensure alignment of resources with fundraising targets, campaign priorities, and institutional branding initiatives.
Advancement & Fundraising:
Design and lead a comprehensive fundraising program that increases annual philanthropic support year-over-year through major gifts, planned giving, annual fund growth, grants, corporate partnerships, and sponsorships.
Personally cultivate, solicit, and steward a targeted portfolio of high-capacity prospects and donors, ensuring personalized engagement strategies and successful solicitation outcomes.
Partner with the Nerman Family President and Board of Trustees to identify, prepare, and support their active participation in cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities.
Establish standardized processes, reporting, and compliance protocols for gift acceptance, acknowledgment, and stewardship to ensure donor trust and operational excellence.
Provide strategic oversight of KCAI's endowment, including donor relations, reporting, and alignment with investment policies.
Strategic Communications & Marketing:
Lead the development of a unified brand strategy that amplifies KCAI's position as a premier art and design institution and drives measurable increases in enrollment inquiries, donor engagement, and community awareness.
Direct the creation of compelling storytelling campaigns across print, web, video, and social media that highlight student success, faculty excellence, alumni impact, and institutional innovation.
Partner with Admissions, Academic Affairs, and Advancement to create integrated campaigns that advance enrollment goals and fundraising outcomes.
Oversee the development of a comprehensive design system and editorial guidelines to ensure brand consistency across all digital, print, and experiential touchpoints.
Implement analytics frameworks to track and evaluate the effectiveness of communications campaigns, audience engagement, and media reach, adjusting strategies accordingly.
Community Engagement & External Relations:
Serve as KCAI's ambassador with community organizations, cultural institutions, and corporate partners, building strategic alliances that enhance visibility, partnerships, and philanthropic opportunities.
Proactively represent the college at civic, arts, and higher education events, positioning KCAI as a thought leader in art and design education.
Develop measurable strategies for community engagement that result in new partnerships, expanded audiences, and stronger institutional reputation.

● Manage, mentor, and evaluate the performance of both the Underground Art Store
Manager and the Cafe Nerman Manager, fostering a positive and efficient work
environment.
● Work with the Cafe Nerman Manager to ensure high-quality food and beverage service,
compliance with health and safety standards, and maximum operational efficiency and
profitability.
● Collaborate with the Underground Store Manager to enhance profitability, customer
satisfaction, and operational efficiency across the art supply store and mailroom .
Store Operations
● Oversee the day-to-day operation of the Marble & Canvas Store, including
opening/closing procedures, cleanliness, and customer service.
● Coordinate with the Underground Store Manager and Cafe Nerman Manager to develop
and implement store and cafe policies and procedures to ensure consistency, efficiency,
and profitability across all services.
● Monitor sales performance and maintain financial records; prepare sales reports as
needed for all retail entities.
● Coordinate with campus departments for special events, pop-ups, and campus-wide
sales initiatives across all retail locations.
Merchandise & Inventory Management (Marble & Canvas Store Focus)
● Curate and manage inventory of KCAI-branded merchandise, artist-made goods, alumni
artwork, and other unique items for the Marble & Canvas Store.
● Collaborate with various artists to source and showcase original artwork and handmade
products.
● Track inventory levels, place reorders, and coordinate with vendors and artists to
maintain appropriate stock levels.
● Manage the point-of-sale system and ensure accurate pricing, barcoding, and inventory
tracking.
Artist Engagement
● Develop and oversee a program for alumni work.
● Facilitate collaborations between faculty and KCAI exhibitions for special product lines
that align with events, visiting artists, and exhibitions.
● Partner with internal teams, when necessary, to create experiential learning
opportunities for current students, Alumni or KCAI faculty/staff.
Financial Oversight & Sales Growth
● Manage the overall budget for KCAI Auxiliary Services, including revenue projections,
expense control, and financial reporting for Marble & Canvas , the Underground Art
Store, and Cafe Nerman.
● Monitor sales performance and implement strategies to increase revenue across all
retail operations.
● Work in partnership with Advancement and the Alumni & Professional Practice Centers
to explore alumni-focused or fundraising initiatives tied to store merchandise.
● Seek funding opportunities, sponsorships, or grants to support store initiatives.
Student Worker Supervision (Marble & Canvas Store Focus)
● Recruit, train, and supervise a team of student workers for the Marble & Canvas Store.
● Create a supportive and educational work environment, offering mentorship and
opportunities for skill development.
● Schedule shifts, delegate responsibilities, and monitor performance.
Customer Engagement & Marketing
● Create engaging in-store displays and maintain visual merchandising that reflects the
artistic identity of KCAI.
● Collaborate with the marketing team to promote store offerings via social media,
newsletters, and campus communications.
● Collaborate with the Institutional Advancement team to develop and maintain a
comprehensive customer database to support sales promotion, engagement, and
tracking efforts.
● Build strong relationships with students, faculty, staff, and alumni to foster a sense of
community through the store.
● Position the store as a site for ongoing dialogue and experimentation in contemporary
art, design, and retail in collaboration with faculty and institutional partners.

Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications:
● Strong knowledge of merchandising, inventory management, and sales strategies.
● Strong understanding of visual merchandising principles and storytelling through product
presentation.
● Experience working with artists or educational institutions is a plus.
● Excellent leadership, communication, and customer service skills.
● Demonstrated ability to collaborate across departments and build relationships with
faculty, alumni, and students in an academic or creative setting.
● Proficiency in retail POS systems, e-commerce platforms, and financial reporting.
● Ability to develop marketing initiatives and community engagement programs.
● Experience in utilizing project management systems.
Required Experience/Education:
● Bachelor's degree in Business, Retail Management, Arts Administration, or related field
(or equivalent experience).
● Minimum 3 years of experience in retail management with demonstrated success in
merchandising and buying.
Preferred Experience/Education:
● Prior experience in Adobe Creative Suite products and Google Suite.
● Prior experience with Monday's project management software.
● Prior experience in an Area Management or District Management position.
● Experience collaborating with creative professionals or within an arts-related
environment.
