1990

1990: The Birth of Western Resources, Inc.

Kansas Municipal Gas Agency (KMGA) was founded in 1990 under the authority of the Kansas Interlocal Cooperative Act.

1992

On February 5, 1992, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission approved the merger application.

1992: KPL merged with KG&E to become Western Resources, serving 560,000 customers and 1.06 million natural gas customers in three states.

1993

By 1993, management had fully integrated the merger between KG&E and KPL, and located its corporate office in Topeka, Kansas.

In 1993, KMGA contracted with Kansas Municipal Energy Agency (KMEA) for the provision of management services.

Western Resources' total net generating capability amounted to 4,985,000 kilowatts in 1993.

1996

Criticism was sharply focused on David Wittig, under whose leadership, which began in 1996, the company had declined steadily.

1997

Kansas Gas Service was formed in 1997 when ONEOK, Inc. purchased natural gas assets from Western Resources.

1998

In March 1998, in what appeared to be the final chapter of this saga, Western Resources and Kansas City Power and Light (KCPL) reached their own merger agreement.

By the terms of the 1998 deal, Western and KCP&L would contribute a combined $8.2 billion in electric assets to create Westar, a new Kansas City-based utility serving Kansas City, Wichita, and Topeka.

1999

Though regulators seemed willing to grant their approval under certain conditions, KCPL terminated the merger agreement late in 1999.

2001

2001: Western Resources changes its name to Westar Energy, Inc.

2002

2002: Kansas Regulators Order Restructuring

2014

ONEOK separated its natural gas distribution business in January 2014 to create ONE Gas, one of the largest publicly traded, 100 percent-regulated natural gas utilities in the United States.

2018

Evergy was created in 2018 as the result of a merger between Westar Energy and KCP&L.
