Kansas State University history

During this era, in 1873, Kansas State helped pioneer the academic teaching of home economics for women, becoming one of the first two colleges to offer the program of study.

Twelve years after opening, the university moved its main campus from the location of Blue Mont Central College to its present site in 1875.

Roberts’s family was involved in journalism and politics; his father served as chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1953, and his great-grandfather founded a newspaper in the territorial era.

With raising enrollment, the Department of Business Administration was created, within the School of Arts & Sciences, in 1956.

In 1959, the Kansas legislature changed the name again to Kansas State University of Agriculture and Applied Science to reflect a growing number of graduate programs.

The School of Commerce was established in 1962, with C. Clyde Jones serving as the first dean of the college.

He returned to Kansas in 1967 to become an aide to United States Senator Frank Carlson, and the following year he began working for United States Rep.

By 1970, the College of Business Administration was the second largest college at K-State.

The college received accreditation for the first time in 1973.

The School of Commerce was established in 1962, with C. Clyde Jones serving as the first dean of the college. It operated as one department, until the departments of accounting, finance, management and marketing were created in 1979.

When Sebelius announced his retirement in 1980, Roberts ran for his seat, easily winning in the predominantly Republican 1st congressional district.

The Salina campus was created in 1991 after the merger of the Kansas College of Technology with Kansas State.

In 2009 the Master of Business Administration is ranked for the first time by the Aspen Institute in their Global 100 programs.

It is ranked again in 2011.

In 2014 Roberts faced the toughest reelection bid of his career, overcoming a surprisingly strong challenge in the primary before winning his closest general election.

Bloomberg BusinessWeek ranked the College of Business Administration at K-State as the 39th best public business school in the country in 2015.

General Richard Myers began serving as the interim president of Kansas State University and was announced as the permanent president on November 15, 2016.
