Karmanos Cancer Institute company history timeline

1943

Karmanos began as the Detroit Institute for Cancer Research in 1943 and was later named the Michigan Cancer Foundation, encompassing the Meyer L. Prentis Comprehensive Cancer Center of Metropolitan Detroit and the cancer programs of the Detroit Medical Center and Wayne State University.

1965

Barbara Ann met Peter at Henry Ford High School; they married in January 1965.

1973

Devoted to her family and an outstanding athlete, Barbara Ann pitched in when Peter co-founded Compuware, the international computer systems firm, in 1973.

The National Breast Cancer Prevention Trial releases news that the drug, Tamoxifen, can reduce the incidence of breast cancer in healthy women at high-risk for the disease by 50%. The drug was created with the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line established by the Institute in 1973.

1989

Barbara Ann was 46 when she died on January 10, 1989.

1995

In 1995, the cancer center was named after Barbara Ann Karmanos, the late wife of Peter Karmanos Jr., former chairman and chief executive officer of Compuware Corporation.

2013

On October 30, 2013, Karmanos Cancer Institute and McLaren Health Care signed an agreement that created the largest cancer research and provider network in Michigan.

2021

The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute is pleased to announce the winners of its 2021 Heroes of Cancer Awards.
