Duties, Responsibilities & Other
KCI is seeking a motivated student to join our team as a Natural Resources Intern for Summer 2026. This internship is ideal for a bright, highly motivated student pursuing a degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related natural sciences field who is interested in gaining hands-on experience in natural resources and ecological restoration. Applicants should be enrolled in an environmental science, engineering, or related college program.
The intern will work under the supervision of a technical manager within KCI's Natural Resources Practice based out of Nashville, TN to gain exposure to real world projects and daily work tasks. Summer interns will work a 40-hour week, with at least 10 weeks of work required during the period from mid-May to mid- August. Work may involve extended periods of field work in various weather conditions. Interns will be assigned a dedicated supervisor and mentor, are required to attend planned activities, and complete assigned tasks. Responsibilities include:
Assist in natural resource surveys in Tennessee or surrounding states including vegetative monitoring, stream surveying, identification and delineation of water resources (wetlands, streams, open waters, etc.) and protected species/suitable habitat assessment surveys.
Collect GPS data in the field with the use of a hand-held GPS unit.
Prepare GIS maps and figures for use in reports.
Assist with the preparation of technical reports and permitting documents.
Apply quality control procedures in alignment with ISO.
Become familiar with regulatory requirements and restrictions for various projects and ensure compliance.
Attend project meetings.
Work in a team environment or independently.
Provide on-time delivery of project expectations with favorable feedback.
Overnight travel within North Carolina or in adjacent states may be required.
Perform administrative duties as requested.

The Roadway Engineering Designer will design and prepare drawings for various civil, transportation, traffic, structural, mechanical, water/wastewater, and

This position will support a variety Dam Safety Engineering projects across the East Region. Duties, Responsibilities & Other
KCI is seeking a motivated student for a Traffic Engineering Internship to join our team for Summer 2026.This position offers hands-on experience supporting public and private sector traffic engineering projects under the supervision of experienced engineers. Typical assignments may include assisting with traffic modeling, data collection, traffic impact analyses, traffic signal design tasks, signing and striping plans, and corridor or planning studies. Summer interns will work a 40-hour week, with at least 10 weeks of work required during the period from mid-May to the end of August. Interns will be assigned a dedicated supervisor and mentor, are required to attend planned activities, and must submit mid-summer and end-of-summer reports/presentations. Responsibilities include:
Assist in preparing traffic signal, pavement marking, signing, lighting, and maintenance of traffic plans
Support Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) design efforts
Conduct traffic data collection (counts, field observations, etc.)
Assist with traffic impact analyses and traffic operations studies
Support traffic safety and transportation planning studies
Perform basic traffic analyses using industry software
Assist with quantity takeoffs and cost estimates
Help prepare written technical memoranda and reports
Qualifications
Education and/or Skills Required:
• This is an entry level position where no previous experience is required.

- Perform as project manager, and/or technical specialist on roadway engineering projects, responsible for invoicing, managing, and monitoring financial performance of project budgets.

- Prepare reports and develop planning documents.
- Communicate with clients and stakeholders to understand client's needs.
- Identify and analyze the principal design features and major design alternatives that satisfy the project's purpose and the client's needs.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

Education and Experience
