Keck Graduate Institute company history timeline

1997

In 1997, through a generous $50 million grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation, Keck Graduate Institute was born.

Henry Riggs, then president of Harvey Mudd College, established the institute in 1997 to address what he perceived as a lack of scientists trained to convert new scientific discoveries into practical uses.

2002

The institute received a $50 million endowment from the W. M. Keck Foundation, after which it was named. It awarded its first Master of Bioscience degree in 2002.

2003

July 15, 2003: Founding president Hank Riggs retires and Sheldon Schuster becomes president.

He also became the institute's first president, serving until 2003.

2005

October 15, 2005: Alumni Patio dedication ceremony

2006

August 14, 2006: PhD in Applied Life Sciences program begins as overall enrollment increases to 68.

2009

August 17, 2009: Postdoctoral Professional Master’s program begins with its first cohort.

2010

August 16, 2010: The Postbaccalaureate Premedical Certificate program starts with its first group of students.

2016

August 15, 2016: Master of Engineering in Biopharmaceutical Processing program begins as overall enrollment increases to 517.

2018

August 23, 2018: Two new master’s programs in genetic counseling and genomic data analytics welcome their first cohorts to KGI, along with students in the new Master of Science in Medical Device Engineering program.
