Kennedy High School Company History Timeline

1865
Founded in 1865 by the Freedman s Bureau, the school was dedicated to the intellectual, academic, moral, and social enhance-ment of students.
1909
In 1909, the school was established at First and Leigh Streets, and the name was changed to Armstrong High School in honor of the founder of Hampton Institute, General Samuel Chapman Armstrong.
1912
In 1912, Armstrong became an accredited high school with two additional years of normal training.
1962
In 1962, efforts began to open a co-educational Catholic High School in south Seattle.
1963
While in Rome in 1963, the Archbishop of Seattle learned of the assassination of United States President John F. Kennedy and announced that the yet to be built school would be named in his memory.
1964
John F. Kennedy High School opened in 1964.
1965
In 1965, ground is broken to begin construction of John F. Kennedy Memorial High School.
1966
However, by 1966 a typical ninth through twelfth year high school was established.
The first class of freshman students enrolled in the fall of 1966 and classes were conducted in portables at St Thomas in Riverton Heights due to school construction.
1968
Established in 1968, JFK opened as a state-of-the-art school facility for the East End s various neighborhoods including but not limited to several housing projects.
1969
The general office was renovated in 1969 making available space for two assistant principals.
1970
In the nearly fifty years since the first graduating class of 1970, John F. Kennedy Catholic High School has graduated over 9000 alumni who are proud to be called Lancers for Life .
1979
In 1979, Armstrong High School and John F. Kennedy High School were combined to form the Armstrong-Kennedy High School complex.
