Kent Hospital history

In 1954, a four-story clinical addition was constructed at and a separate three-story building was built to house a school of nursing and provide housing for nursing students.

The NHS took over the building from the navy in 1961 and in the following four years underwent a massive £1.5m (£31m) modernisation.

It reopened in 1965 as Medway Hospital.

Since The Providence Center opened its doors in 1969, it has provided people from all walks of life with mental health and substance use services.

In 1972 another expansion upgraded outpatient services and expanded emergency services.

The huge site at the eastern edge of town in Willesborough area opened finally in 1980 after a long battle about whether a large regional hospital was needed for this part of the county.

But in January 1982 the three-and-half acre site was sold to developers after environment minister Michael Heseltine overruled a public inquiry inspector and gave the go-ahead for its use as an industrial estate of 42,000 square feet of old and new factory units

In 1991, the new Outpatient Services facility and new Surgical Department opened.

In 1992, the 32,000-square foot Inpatient Rehabilitation Center and Physical Therapy opened.

In 1996, the Outpatient Services Center opened on the southwest corner of the hospital.

All Saints' Hospital then (1997) and now as a housing estate after it closed down when services moved to the newly expanded Medway Maritime Hospital

The hospital merged services provided at St Bartholomew's in Rochester and All Saints' in Chatham in 1999.

With more than 25 years of health care finance experience, Jim has served in various leadership positions in finance for Kent Hospital and Care New England since 2001, including vice president of accounting.

In January 2002, the 12,000-square foot Cancer Center opened, adding radiation therapy, chemotherapy and surgery services previously unavailable in Milford.

In August 2003, construction began on a three-floor expansion to upgrade neonatal intensive care services, increase delivery room capacity and provide antepartum/GYN beds in one centralized location.

In September 2004 the first cardiac surgery was performed at Kent General Hospital.

In 2005, the History Wall and Tree of Life are dedicated at Milford Memorial.

In 2006, the Total Joint Center opens.

As the 2007 colour aerial photograph shows, there is plenty of surrounding land around the Harvey which could be developed further.

In 2008, the Retail Stores at Bayhealth were unveiled and a new Ambulatory Pharmacy and Wound Care Center opened.

In February 2012, the new Integrated Cancer Center and Emergency and Trauma Services began treating patients.

In 2013, CNE chose EPIC as its new ambulatory clinical information technology partner.

In 2014, Bayhealth announced plans to build a state-of-the-art health campus in Milford.

The fight to save the minor injuries unit from closing was won in 2015 thanks to the help of dozens of dogged campaigners.

The battle has been lost with the NHS selling up in 2017 and developers were granted permission for 19 homes and 19 apartments around the site last month .

Opening in 2018, it will include an inpatient hospital, emergency department and vast outpatient services.

In 2019, Bayhealth Milford Memorial closed and patient care began at the Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus.
