Kentucky State University company history timeline

1890

In spring of 1890, the first five students graduated.

Taking its cue from Booker T. Washington, the school began focusing less on its liberal arts roots and offering more manual and industrial training for its students when it took advantage of the 1890 Morrill Land Grant Act.

1893

In 1893, a high school was added since the institution’s administration realized that many of the students coming to the Normal School were from poor areas which had no public high schools.

1929

In 1929, President Rufus Atwood closed down the high school because it was a financial drain and by then most students had access to high school.

1938

In 1938, the school was named Kentucky State College for Negroes, and began focusing again on offering a more traditional liberal arts education.

1942

The civil engineering program was started in 1942 after the NAACP threatened a lawsuit on behalf of a black student who wanted to attend the engineering program at the University of Kentucky.

1960

In 1960, the first white student enrolled.

1972

Kentucky State College became a university in 1972, renamed Kentucky State University.

1973

By 1973, the first graduate students were enrolled in the school of public affairs.

1982

In 1982, an additional mission was added with KSU aiming to become a major repository for the collection of artifacts, books, and records related to its history of educating black citizens; the Center of Excellence for the Study of Kentucky African Americans (CESKAA) houses that collection.
