Kenyon College history

Dissatisfied with the original location of the college in Worthington, Chase purchased 8,000 acres (3,200 ha) of land in Knox County (with the Mount Vernon lawyer Henry Curtis), and reached what he would name Gambier Hill on July 24, 1825.

In 1829, the first building of what became known as Kenyon College was completed, making Chase's vision a reality.

In 1831, Chase resigned as as Kenyon's president and as bishop of his diocese.

In 1852, the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity constructed the first fraternity house in the United States at Kenyon.

After opening in 1937, Hayes Grocery was one such space.

Some local businessmen ran establishments that stood for decades, like Jim Hayes, who built the Village Inn in 1947 as well as Hayes Grocery — later renamed the Village Market, according to Stamp.

Palme joined the Social Democratic government in 1963 as minister without portfolio.

Kenyon constructed Farr Hall, an expansive building that spanned the block between Brooklyn Street and Scott Lane, in 1966, significantly altering Village life by displacing several long standing businesses while simultaneously adding new ones.

He succeeded Erlander as party secretary and as prime minister in 1969.

The 1976 general election resulted in the defeat of the Social Democrats after 44 years in power.

After being elected prime minister again in 1982, Palme tried to reinstate socialist economic policies in Sweden, and he continued to be outspoken on matters of European security.

Palme was assassinated by a gunman in 1986.

However, since Engström had died in 2000, no charges would be filed.

The closure of Campus Auto in 2007 prompted the College and Township to create a sustainability committee that investigated how businesses in Gambier can meet the needs of present and future residents.

Chilito’s Fresh Mex is the first benefactor from Kenyon’s 2018 demolition of Farr Hall, intended to resurrect an older version of the Village’s spirit, according to Stamp.
