Under general supervision, to provide patient care as assigned in a hospital, clinic, correctional facility, or in-patient psychiatric setting.

Compensation:
The estimated pay for this position is $ 26.7839 to $ 38.0670. The rates shown include a 6% premium pay (base= $-$ plus 6%). This reflects only a portion of the total compensation package for this position. Additional compensation may be available for this role through differentials, incentives, and bonuses. In addition, this position may be eligible for participation and company contributions into the Kern County Employees' Retirement Plan.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
Vocational Nurse I is distinguished from Vocational Nurse II by the latter's completion of a course approved by the nursing board certifying the individual to start peripheral intravenous infusions. Vocational Nurse II's assigned to Psychiatric Nursing or Correctional Nursing must have one (1) year of applicable experience in a particular specialty such as inpatient acute psychiatry, or correctional medicine in lieu of the intravenous infusion certification.
Promotions within the series are considered on a merit basis when recommended by the Department Head and approved by the Vice President of Human Resources.
Essential Functions:
Performs the more responsible patient care functions utilizing broad knowledge in the techniques, methods, procedures and equipment required in support of the registered nurse and medical staff in patient treatment;
demonstrates knowledge and use of the nursing process;
performs general nursing care in various departments; uses the mechanical lift in moving patients;
performs minor dressing changes, cauterizations, deep tracheal suction, tracheotomy care, bathing, colostomy care, and traction care;
takes and records temperature, pulse and respiration; observes and keeps records and reports unusual conditions or behavior;
participates in development of nursing care plans;
maintains records reflecting patient's condition, medication, and treatment;
prepares patients for examinations and treatments;
administers special diets, and treatments as prescribed;
gives medications if certified;
assists staff with dressings;
dependent upon area of practice or department assignments, demonstrates clinical knowledge and skill in the care of the newborn, infant, toddler, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient ranging up to 100+ years of age.

Employment Standards:
Possess a current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) card at time of hire. As a continued condition of employment, employee must maintain RQI Provider certification and competency.
Depending on assignment incumbents may be required to possess and maintain specific certificates of competency as a condition of employment.
Education: Completion of a basic pre-service Vocational Nurse curriculum accredited by the California Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technician examiners. OR completion of a educational program leading to an Associate degree or Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing.
License: Possession of a current valid license as a Vocational Nurse as issued by the State of California OR possession of a temporary license as a Vocational Nurse issued by the State of California OR possession of an interim permit to practice as a Vocational Nurse issued by the State of California. Vocational Nurse II is required to be State certified to start intravenous infusions. Probationary employees possessing a temporary license OR an interim permit must acquire their California Vocational Nurse license during their 6-month probationary period or fail probation.

Ability to stand and walk for lengthy periods; ability to sit, bend, squat, kneel and/or twist; ability to push and pull heavy and bulky objects; ability to perform tasks requiring simple grasping and fine finger manipulation; ability to reach and manipulate objects above shoulder height; ability to lift and carry unassisted objects weighing up to 70 lbs. (objects are generally carried distances up to 100 feet); ability to assist with lifting and carrying objects weighing in excess of 100 lbs.; good visual and auditory acuity; ability to work in areas with extended exposure to noise, injury, disease, and death.
Dependent upon assignment, applicants may be required to pass an extensive background check and be fingerprinted. Felony convictions will be disqualifying and convictions for misdemeanors and traffic offenses will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
A valid California Class “C” Driver's License is required at the time of appointment.

The Float Pool RN I (FPRN I) is a flexible and experienced professional RN who is competent to work within the following specialty groups as indicated.
The FPRNI is a
proficient
clinical nurse who utilizes the nursing process to provide safe and therapeutic patient care. A FPRN I functions as a productive member of the interdisciplinary team, carries out established policies, procedures and standards to meet the needs of high acuity patients. A FPRN I advocates for the advancement of the mission, vision and values of the organization, i.e. promotes patient throughput, the optimal patient experience and integrates evidenced based nursing into clinical practice.
As a Float Pool Registered Nurse I (FPRN I) in the Float Pool, you will be oriented to multiple inpatient departments. Our nursing float pool supplements staffing throughout the hospital based on need. Nurses who work in the Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center float pool can float between multiple areas.

Using hospital and regulatory standards of care for rehabilitation, the nurse demonstrates sound clinical judgment in the development, implementation and evaluation of the nursing aspects of the trans-disciplinary care plan. In conjunction with the patient/family, the nurse develops an individualized patient care plan and determines interventions based on assessment/reassessment findings. The nurse evaluates patient outcomes on an ongoing basis, establishes priorities for patient care services as evidenced by modification of care plan, if necessary, and demonstrates the ability to accurately document patient care activities in the medical record.
Utilizing a case management approach which initiates discharge planning on admission, the nurse plans, and guides, directs, coordinates and collaboratively incorporates the overall aspects of patient care across the continuum by effectively communicating with physicians, staff and other disciplines.
Safely and competently administers pharmacotherapeutics adhering to medication policies, procedures, practices and standards, and monitors the resultant outcomes based upon the patient's response to treatment and its effect on the rehabilitation plan of care.
Assesses and responds appropriately to ensure patient safety based on the physical environment, equipment and the patient's behavior.
Demonstrates the ability to provide care in emergency situations and follows established emergency procedures and practices.
Communicates and follows the organizational chain of command for notification of patient care/service issues, when appropriate.
Maintains knowledge of, and demonstrates the ability to identify therapeutic rehabilitation patient care issues/problems and determines measures and interventions to promote, maintain and/or restore health for the adolescent through geriatric rehabilitation patient population as described in the Rehabilitation policies/procedures including the skills competency check list. The nurse also provides appropriate care through the healthcare continuum including end of life.
Assures that the rights of all patients are respected and maintained by allowing for privacy and dignity in the provision of care.
Determines the presence and type of Advance Directive, if applicable. The nurse ensures patient and/or family involvement in the decision-making process as it relates to patient care, end of life and ethical issues. The nurse is aware of the reporting responsibilities and reports suspected cases of abuse or neglect relative to the adolescent through geriatric patient population as appropriate.
Identifies patient/family educational needs; initiates and provides individualized teaching which considers the functional/developmental age and the needs of the adolescent through geriatric rehabilitation patient population. The nurse evaluates and documents the effectiveness of the patient/family teaching through assessment of their comprehension of the instruction and demonstration of appropriate responses.
Demonstrating knowledge of age specific care, including but not limited to, identifying the need for additional safety measures, physiological normal values/readings; and assessing skin integrity, behavior, motor skills and/or activities that place patients at risk as well as communicates effectively in a clear, concise, understandable manner. Definition:
