Kiawah Island Club company history timeline

1801

The Plantation house was rebuilt in 1801.

1802

Around 1802, the state’s first British Consul, James Shoolbred, gained title to the western half of the Island, though it was later consolidated and no longer in their possession.

1812

During the War of 1812, fortifications are built on the north end of Kiawah to maintain control of the Stono and Kiawah Rivers

1865

The Civil War lasted until 1865, and during this time, the Gibbs and Vanderhorst family abandoned the Island due to its lack of protection and susceptibility to enemy attack.

1900

In 1900, a surviving member of the Vanderhorst family purchased the western half of the island, and again the island was under single ownership.

1911

In 1911 a daily boat service to the island had begun, bringing supplies to and from Charleston.

1950

In 1950, the island was sold to C. C. Royal, a lumberman from Augusta, Georgia.

The prominent Vanderhorst family of Charleston kept the Island for 180 years before selling it to C.C. Royal of Aiken in 1950 for hunting and fishing.

In 1950, businessman C.C. Royal purchased the island to be used for logging.

1954

Royal had built a few vacation homes on Kiawah Island by 1954, after seeing the potential for a premiere vacation destination.

In 1954, Royal began development of a small oceanfront community along Eugenia Avenue, named for his wife.

1974

The Kiawah Island Company Ltd. bought the Island from the Royal family in 1974 and started to develop it into the world-class resort that it is today.

That vacation rental potential led Royal to sell Kiawah Island in 1974, for a profit of $18 million.

1976

In 1976, the Kiawah Island Resort opened, with the Kiawah Island Inn—including two swimming pools, two restaurants and a bar—and the Marsh Point (subsequently renamed Cougar Point) golf course designed by Gary Player.

1981

Jack Nicklaus, known as one of the most famous golfers in history, designed the Turtle Point golf course in 1981.

1988

The town of Kiawah was Incorporated in 1988.

1991

Born in New York and raised in North Carolina, Dan first visited Kiawah Island for the 1991 Ryder Cup and it has been a lifelong goal of his to return to the Island professionally.

1993

The first phase of the Kiawah Island Club, designed by Robert A.M. Stern, was founded in 1993.

1994

Since 1994, land use on the island has been subject to development agreements.

1995

Part of The Kiawah Island Club, and Tom Fazio’s second Island project, the River Course opened to Members in 1995.

2004

In 2004, Freshfields Village began its construction process and opened shortly after.

2013

Having acquired the firm in 2013, South Street Partners furthers its legacy for excellence and its mindful approach to expansion.
