1997

First Major Acquisition: 1997

1998

In June 1998 KMP acquired a 24 percent interest in Plantation Pipe Line, paying $110 million to Equilon.

1999

In February 1999 Sempra Energy of San Diego, California, made a tentative deal to purchase KN Energy for $1.9 billion, but by June the deal was off, scuttled by KN Energy's $3.3 billion in long-term debt.

1999: Following acquisition, name is changed to Kinder Morgan, Inc.

2000

In December 2000 KMP began adding external businesses.

According to Forbes, it is considered one of the top 2000 largest public companies in the world.

2001

In 2001, Kinder Morgan's third publicly traded company, Kinder Morgan Management, LLC (KMR) was formed to facilitate institutional ownership of KMP equity.

2006

On August 28, 2006, Kinder Morgan announced that it would be taken private in a management-led leveraged buyout totaling approximately $22 billion.

2011

In October 2011, Kinder Morgan Inc. agreed to buy El Paso Corp. (EP) for $21.1 billion and gave the combined company 67,000 miles (107,000 kilometers) of gas lines, eclipsing Enterprise Products Partners LP (EPD) as the biggest United States pipeline operator.

2013

2013: In May, KMP completes an approximately $5 billion acquisition of Copano Energy, which enables the company to significantly expand its midstream services footprint and offer a wider array of services to its customers.

2014

On August 10, 2014, Kinder announced it was moving to full ownership of its partially owned subsidiaries Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, Kinder Morgan Management, and El Paso Pipeline Partners in a deal worth $71 billion.

2018

2018: In August, the Government of Canada indirectly acquires the Trans Mountain Pipeline System and the Trans Mountain Expansion Project from KML through the Trans Mountain Corporation (a subsidiary of the Canada Development Investment Corporation) for a cash consideration of $4.5 billion.

2019

2019: In December, the Pembina Pipeline Corporation acquires the United States portion of the Cochin Pipeline and the outstanding common equity of KML, including the 70% majority voting interest held by KMI.
