But a new mayor took office in 1953.
High School school opened in September, 1957.
However, by 1957, many Chavez Ravine residents — the vast majority of them Mexican American — had already left or been forced out.
Another example: Soffer expanded her lessons on the 1968 East L.A. student walkouts because her class was so enthralled.
Garfield Junior High School was established in the early 1900s at 1414 Walnut Street, just south of Rose Street. It was renamed for the civil rights leader Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. a few years after his assassination in 1968.
After 25 years, Calaroga school was closed in 1983 because the District made a decision to close all of the junior high schools.
In August of 1986, after having been closed for 3 years by the District, the old Calaroga Jr.
In the spring of 1987, an assembly was held which made the new name official, and guests from the Hayward School Board, NAACP, and even our then mayor attended.
Following a long legal struggle, a new cafeteria (the Dining Commons) was opened for use in the fall of 2008.
