You are the right person for the Stormwater Smart Educator position if you enjoy interacting with school-age students and their families, have a positive mindset about environmental education, and are comfortable teaching in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings. The Stormwater Smart program has been serving local governments for 20 years as part of the PTRC's Regional Planning Department. The Stormwater Smart Educator will teach lessons about stormwater and pollution prevention across six counties in the Piedmont Triad. The activities will provide opportunities to work with multiple communities in our region and gain valuable teaching experience using lessons endorsed by the Environmental Educators of North Carolina (EENC). If you are service-minded, responsible, and work well in a flexible and supportive environment, we want to help you build your professional network here in the Regional Planning department at the PTRC! The ideal candidate for the Stormwater Smart Educator would have both experience and training as an environmental educator, which may include college coursework related to education, environmental science, sustainability, or a related topic. However, a bachelor's degree is not required for this position, and applicants who have experience leading groups in outdoor activities and demonstrate their understanding of key principles in environmental education are highly encouraged to apply. While several skills associated with the job can be acquired during training, the ability to apply good judgment while working with people from a variety of backgrounds is essential in this position. Please note that candidates who are looking to work fewer than 10 hours per week are still encouraged to apply! Typical assignments will include teaching interactive watershed science lessons in K-12 classrooms, leading creek walks in public parks, and occasionally manning a booth at Earth Day fairs and other community events. Educational activities occur throughout our 6-county service area, including Alamance, Davidson, Forsyth, Guilford, Randolph, and Rockingham counties. You will have the option to include travel time in your weekly hours, or to track and submit mileage for reimbursement at the state rate on a monthly basis. We are looking for educators for programs that typically occur mid-week (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday). Programs in schools can run from 8:00 - 2:00, while community programs (libraries, recreation centers) are often shorter programs in the mid-morning or mid-afternoon. If you have schedule restrictions that limit your availability or your travel area, but you feel this position is otherwise a great fit for you, we still want to talk to you!
