Kingsborough was founded in 1963, and serves approximately 10,000 students.
The 1964 sale price was $1.
The program became operational in spring 1984 when it recruited its first class of 449 students at four local high schools.
In 1998, in response to the issues of declining high school academic performance and intensive demands on remediation at CUNY, the university replicated the program at its five other community colleges.
The Foundation Office is located in the Kingsborough Community College Office for College Advancement, 2001 Oriental Boulevard, Brooklyn, NY 11235-2398.
Effective Fall 2013, The City University of New York implemented the Pathways initiative across its undergraduate colleges.

In its early years, it also had an annex, known as the "Mid-Brooklyn campus". In 2019 Leonard Riggio, the founder and chairman of Barnes & Noble book stores, donated $1 million toward scholarships for Kingsborough students.
