Kingston Hospital company history timeline

1812

As the population of Kingston grew rapidly after the War of 1812, physicians expressed concern that greater care be given to the sick poor.

1843

The hospital has its origins in a workhouse infirmary built in 1843.

1845

In 1845 the building returned to its original purpose and began seasonal operation as a hospital.

1854

A medical faculty was established by Queen’s College in 1854 with a close relationship to the hospital.

1863

The Watkins wing opened in January 1863 to treat 36 patients including those afflicted with smallpox.

1880

By the 1880’s antiseptic practices had been adopted and the surgical field was expanding.

1890

But its pubic health care did not really come into its own until 1890 when, according to a note in the Columbian Republican newspaper of June 5, 1890, “A movement is on foot in Kingston for the establishment of a city hospital.”

1890 was the starting year for Kingston’s churches to hold annual "Hospital Sundays" whereby churchgoers were asked to donate funds to the hospital.

1891

The Nickle wing opened in April 1891.

1897

On the morning of Christmas Eve in 1897, fire broke out in the St George’s Ward of the Watkins wing.

1901

In 1901, four Benedictine nuns in Kingston began caring for their Catholic brethren at Our Lady of Victory Sanitarium.

In 1901, the hospital had its first elevator installed in the Main building.

1904

In 1904, the services expanded to Benedictine Hospital on Mary’s Avenue where the Sisters continued to work and guide the Hospital through many changes and challenges, and celebrated great successes.

In the August 31, 1915 Eagle, the Sahler Sanitarium is mentioned as a meeting place for the County Prohibitionists to take place on September 1st.

1939

1948

The hospital joined the National Health Service in 1948 and began to redevelop the site the following year.

2007

The surgical centre, which was built by Costain at a cost of £33 million, opened in June 2007.

2008

In June 2008, the Trust opened the Sir William Rous Unit, for those with cancer or concerned they might have cancer.

2013

Effective February of 2013, Benedictine and Kingston Hospitals were renamed HealthAlliance Hospital: Mary’s Avenue Campus and Broadway Campus, respectively.

In 2013, the Foundation’s Board of Directors made the strategic decision to further expand their outreach into the local community by supporting initiatives beyond the hospital setting.
