In 1888, the district built the Adams Avenue School next to the Jefferson School and offered a two-year high school program for students completing the elementary grades.

1938

A wing on the south end of the building was built in 1938 with funds from a bond issue and a Public Works Administration grant.

1951

The west end of the building is the original structure, which expanded with middle and east sections added in 1951.

1955

The present school building on West Essex Ave. was built in 1955 on a 47-acre, seven building, college-style campus, and Kirkwood High School welcomed both white and African-American students to attend school together.

1957

North Kirkwood Middle School (NKMS) was built in 1957 as a junior high school for students in Grades 7, 8 and 9.

1993

Renovations resulting from a tax/bond issue in 1993 included a new gymnasium, renovation of the old gym into a cafeteria/auditorium, technology infrastructure, air conditioning, ADA compliance, and interior upgrades.

2013

In the summer of 2013, the Westchester office was relocated to the front of the building to increase safety and security for our students and staff.
