Kitchen stewards make sure that a kitchen is meeting cleanliness and safety standards. If a kitchen is not clean, it could make guests sick and get shut down by government inspectors, so the kitchen steward's job is vital in making sure that a restaurant runs smoothly.

The kitchen steward takes care of administrative duties involved with maintaining a kitchen, such as drawing up a cleaning schedule, helping with the receiving process, and making sure that everybody knows the safety standards they have to follow. The kitchen steward is not afraid to get their hands dirty and clean kitchen equipment, polish silverware, and remove waste themselves.

Although some kitchen stewards have bachelor's degrees, a diploma is not necessary at all for this position. Practical experience working as a cook or other restaurant position, where a steward had the opportunity to learn all about safety standards and running a kitchen, is more important than a formal diploma. The job of a kitchen steward is one of the more lucrative ones in food service, with an average annual salary of $56,258.

There is more than meets the eye when it comes to being a kitchen steward. For example, did you know that they make an average of $29.75 an hour? That's $61,889 a year!

Between 2018 and 2028, the career is expected to grow 14% and produce 775,300 job opportunities across the U.S.

What Does a Kitchen Steward Do

When it comes to the most important skills required to be a kitchen steward, we found that a lot of resumes listed 20.4% of kitchen stewards included kitchen equipment, while 13.0% of resumes included safety procedures, and 10.6% of resumes included health department. Hard skills like these are helpful to have when it comes to performing essential job responsibilities.

In terms of higher education levels, we found that 0.2% of kitchen stewards have master's degrees. Even though some kitchen stewards have a college degree, it's possible to become one with only a high school degree or GED.

When we researched the most common majors for a kitchen steward, we found that they most commonly earn high school diploma degrees or bachelor's degree degrees. Other degrees that we often see on kitchen steward resumes include associate degree degrees or diploma degrees.

Some places are better than others when it comes to starting a career as a kitchen steward. The best states for people in this position are New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island. Kitchen stewards make the most in New Jersey with an average salary of $91,781. Whereas in New York and Pennsylvania, they would average $91,616 and $89,587, respectively. While kitchen stewards would only make an average of $87,393 in Rhode Island, you would still make more there than in the rest of the country. We determined these as the best states based on job availability and pay. By finding the median salary, cost of living, and using the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Location Quotient, we narrowed down our list of states to these four.
