Knollwood Country Club company history timeline

1895

The original golf course was designed by Lawrence Van Etten and opened in the summer of 1895.

1923

Actually, the story begins in 1923 when Knollwood was 200-odd acres of lush, rolling countryside owned by A.C. McCord.

1924

The first officers also were elected in April of 1924.

The Club was incorporated April 26, 1924, with the following men, all Chicagoans, listed as directors: John V. Farwell, Samuel Insull, William V. Kelley, Robert P. Lamont, C.M. Leonard, Nathan William MacChesney, Lucius Teter, Thomas E. Wilson, and F. Edson White.

In 1924, the club hired A.W. Tillinghast to expand the golf course.

1925

On February 25, 1925, there was a resolution passed consummating the Club's purchase of Knollwood Farm's 220 acres from the original group who, as planned, turned over the land to the Club at cost - $600 per acre.

The course was opened for play in 1925.

1927

During this same period the wooden cabanas, which had been built in 1927, were torn down and replaced by new brick construction to complement the Men's Locker Building and the new Main Clubhouse.

1956

The National Amateur Championship of the USGA was held at Knollwood in September 1956, and the course proved itself a real test for the world's amateur golfers.

1975

They broke ground on the golf course on April 16, 1975.

1978

By 1978, most of the 350 home sites were sold.

1983

In 1983, the Knollwood Corporation decided to sell the country club to the Invitedoration of America (CCA) for $2.3 million.

1984

In 1984, Knollwood Club embarked on a very ambitious Five-Year Plan to bring the facilities of the Club up to the same standard as the golf course.

1990

In the late 1990’s, it was decided that the Clubhouse needed to be rebuilt.

2000

Upon completion, an Opening Gala was held in June of 2000 for members and guests.

2020

About Cale Cale was appointed Director of Food and Beverage for Knollwood Country Club in February of 2020.
