Knox College company history timeline

1837

Knox College was founded as Knox Manual Labor College in 1837 by a group of Presbyterians and Congregationalists organized by George Washington Gale.

1846

The first commencement was in June 1846.

1857

The present name was adopted in 1857.

1860

Two years after the debates, during his presidential campaign, Lincoln was awarded Knox College's first honorary doctorate—a Doctor of Laws degree, announced at the commencement exercises of 5 July 1860.

1873

Galesburg, city, seat (1873) of Knox county, western Illinois, United States It lies about 50 miles (80 km) northwest of Peoria.

1882

From long ago: Samuel McClure, Class of 1882, joined other Knox alumni to found McClure's, a magazine that championed the work of muckrakers-progressive, activist journalists.

1916

Galesburg’s Orpheum Theatre (opened 1916) was built using a variety of styles of architecture, with the front designed in French Second Empire style.

1937

1957

Seymour Library, which had been reconstructed and enlarged in 1957-58, adds the 100,000th volume to its collection.

1963

1967

The city’s Carl Sandburg (community) College was opened in 1967, the year of Sandburg’s death.

1969

A time capsule is found inside the tower, dating to the 1969 repairs.

1987

2001

President Millman announces that he would step down effective September 1, 2001.
