Kobrand company history timeline

1944

In 1944, at the age of 38, he struck out on his own and formed his own wine and spirits marketing company, which he called the Kobrand Corporation.

1945

1945 Kobrand develops a relationship with Maison Louis Jadot, one of the most respected firms in Burgundy and producer of some of the region's most noted wines.

1946

1946 The important relationship is formed with François Taittinger of Champagne Taittinger, one of Champagne’s great grande marques.

1962

Kopf's relationship with Jadot in the meantime remained strong, even after Louis Jadot died in 1962 at the age of 62.

1965

With the Jadot, Beefeater, and Taittinger brands anchoring the portfolio, Kobrand enjoyed steady growth for the next 20 years. It was prosperous enough that in 1965 Kopf was able to acquire a five-story townhouse on 40th Street on Manhattan's east side to relocate Kobrand's headquarters.

1978

1978 Michel Redde represents Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre terroir in Kobrand’s portfolio.

1979

Also in that year, Kobrand began representing Sonoma Valley's St Francis Vineyards, a winery established in 1979 that had established a reputation for its Merlots and other fine wines.

1980

1980 Bouvet-Ladubay, a historic producer of Loire sparkling wines, joins the portfolio.

1985

1985 Kopf dies, after securing the company for his three daughters.

1986

1986 Kobrand joins forces with Champagne Taittinger to begin the Domaine Carneros joint venture.

Aside from the fine wine category, in 1986 Kobrand introduced Alize, a blend of cognac and passion fruit juices new to the United States market.

1987

1987 Cakebread Cellars, one of the most respected family wineries of Napa Valley, secures a marketing agreement with Kobrand Corporation.

1987 Tenuta San Guido, legendary creator of the Super Tuscan Sassicaia, enters the portfolio.

The year 1987 also marked the end of the relationship with Beefeater Gin.

1988

1988 St Francis Vineyards becomes Kobrand’s first joint venture partnership with a Sonoma Valley producer.

1988 Bollini tells a story of nature and passion in Trentino with the addition of its Pinot Grigio to the Kobrand list.

The brand was sold and a new firm, Buckingham Wile Co. assumed marketing chores at the start of 1988.

1988 A marketing agreement with Beefeater Gin is severed after 40 years.

1989

1989 Fonseca, a second Port house and sister brand to Taylor Fladgate, is welcomed into the portfolio.

In 1989 Kobrand began importing wine from Vina Undurraga.

1990

1990 Delamain’s exquisite, hand crafted Cognacs are added to the portfolio.

1992

In 1992 Kobrand tried a new approach in its French business, joining forces with the owners of Fortant de France to develop varietal wine in the South of France.

1993

1993 Kobrand increases its share of ownership in L&L, the producer of Alizé.

1995

1995 The firm begins distributing Benziger Family Winery products.

1996

Another important sales and marketing agreement followed in 1996 with the addition of Joseph Phelps Vineyards of Napa Valley to the fold.

Alize was a favorite of Shakur before his death from a drive-by shooting in 1996.

1997

In 1997, Jadot acquired Chateau des Jacques of Moulin-a-Vent in the Beaujolais district of France.

2000

2000 Tenuta Sette Ponti, one of the most innovative, quality driven producers of world class Super Tuscans, enters the portfolio.

Taking advantage of the boost given to Alize by Shakur and other hip-hop artists, Kobrand introduced Alize Cognac, minus the fruit juices, in 2000.

2001

2001 Kobrand purchases Sequoia Grove, a premier producer of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon in Rutherford, the heart of Napa Valley.

2001 Kobrand forms a partnership in Santa Barbara County through a joint venture with Foley Estates, a producer of world class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the cool Santa Rita Hills AVA.

2001 The addition of Tenute Silvio Nardi’s Brunellos represents an extraordinary enhancement of Kobrand’s Italian Portfolio.

In 2001 Jadot added the 86-acre vineyard Chateau de Bellevue, located in the Morgon region of France.

In 2001 the firm became the United States distributor of New Zealand's Craggy Ranger Winery.

2002

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, certified Organic and Biodynamic since 2002, joins the French portfolio.

2002 Taylor Fladgate and Fonseca are brought together with the respected house of Croft under a new corporate entity, The Fladgate Partnership, which Kobrand represents in its entirety.

2003

2003 A long-sought goal is fulfilled by the representation of Craggy Range, a super-premium producer of estate wines from New Zealand.

2004

2004 Two additional properties of Antonio Moretti, owner of Tenuta Sette Ponti in Tuscany, enter the portfolio: Poggio al Lupo in Maremma and Feudo Maccari in Sicily.

2004 Blue Alize is introduced.

2005

In 2005 it began airing animated commercials featuring an animated character, "Lady in Bleu," which aired on cable television channels.

2006

Kobrand's bid was Depaz Blue Cane Amber Rhum, introduced in June 2006 at select outlets in New York City before making its way to other major cities.

2006 Caposaldo’s classic still and sparkling wines from northern Italy and Tuscany are added to the Kobrand list.

2008

2008 An augmented relationship with Champagne Taittinger includes an increase of Kobrand’s holdings in Domaine Carneros.

2010

2010 Domaine Ferret, a property of Louis Jadot, adds refined expressions of Pouilly-Fuissé to the Kobrand list.

2012

2012 The Seeker brand is launched, representing the world’s finest examples of favorite wine varieties.

2012 Belle de Brillet join the Spirits Portfolio.

2015

2015 Tenuta di Biserno, a joint venture between Marchese Lodovico Antinori and his brother Marchese Piero Antinori, joins the Italian Portfolio.

2016

2016 Résonance, Maison Louis Jadot's first venture outside of France, enters the portfolio.

2016 Lambrusco producer, Medici Ermete enters the Italian Portfolio.

2017

2017 Kobrand purchases premium sake importer, Joto Sake LLC (Joto), becoming the exclusive US marketing representative and importer of a group of premium, multi-generational and family-owned Japanese breweries producing artisanal Sakes.

2017 One of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s oldest estates, Château La Nerthe joins the French portfolio.
