That opportunity presented itself when they learned from their Uncle Sylvester of a machine, which made a continuous flow of soft ice cream, called the "Meisenhelter Ice Cream Freezer" patented in 1914.
Today, as in 1919, Kohr’s Frozen Custard, The Original is lower in fat and sugar than ice cream.
In 1920, Archie, Clair and Elton acquired the first machine manufactured by the machine shop.
Meanwhile, just a few steps away, Kohr's Frozen Custard proclaims that it's been in business ''Since 1923,'' the date, said family members, when Elton came to Seaside.
He opened his first store in Atlantic City in 1924 calling it Kohr’s Frozen Custard and grew his enterprise impressively.
That was in 1955, the first time that disaster visited the Seaside Heights Boardwalk.
Archie Kohr died in 1960 at age 68.
His family lived above the store, but suffered a setback in 1976 when a fire damaged the building beyond repair.
After a stand was destroyed in a 1976 fire, Greg Kohr said, his grandfather enlisted two crews of workers to tear down the ruins and rebuild in 30 days, just in time for the summer season.
In the mid-1990's, the chain stood at six stores before shareholders began aggressively marketing the frozen custard concept.
