Kōkua Kalihi Valley company history timeline

1972

Kōkua Kalihi Valley started in 1972 with four female employees from the Kalihi Valley community whose job it was to walk door to door, sharing the value of "Neighbors being neighborly to neighbors" through talk-story.

1973

KKV moved to two renovated surplus trailers in 1973, and two years later opened O'ahu's first shelter for abused spouses and children.

1975

- Opened O'ahu's first shelter for abused spouses and children in 1975.

1980

The decision to preserve this land as a public resource was first made by the Honolulu City Council in 1980, following a decade of community advocacy.

1986

- Received first Community Health Center grant in 1986.

1989

KKV was designated a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in 1989.

1991

- Established a Youth Gang Prevention task force in 1991.

1994

- Started providing Mental Health Services in 1994.

2001

- Opened Elder Care services program 2001.

2003

By 2003, KKV created the Kalihi Valley Instructional Bike Exchange (KVIBE) for youth.

- Started Bike Klinic in 2003.

-Established a general dentistry resident program through Lutheran Medical Center in 2003.

2005

In 2005, KKV was granted a 20-year lease from the Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources to steward and sustainably develop 100 acres in the back of the Valley.

- Leased 100-acre nature park and named this Ho’oulu ‘Āina in 2005.

2008

- Opened the Judd Medical Clinic in 2008.

- Partnered with Kapiolani Community College Dental Assistant program to provide hands-on training in 2008.

2009

By 2009, KKV completed a capital campaign to build a new Wellness Center and established a partnership with the University of Hawai'i called the Medical Legal Partnership for Children.

2011

Since 2011, KKV has continued to develop its facilities and community activities: in 2011, the Returning to our Roots (Roots) Program was established to meet the community's need for a healthier, more equitable food system.

- Started Returning to Our Roots cultural food program in 2011.

2012

In 2012, KKV's Wellness Center opened to house Dentistry, Pharmacy, Roots, and Roots Café. A few years later, KKV started NieiRek and Seams Wonderful, job training programs for women, and Pacific Voices, an after school program.

2014

- Started NieiRek and Seams Wonderful in 2014.

- Launched KKV’s Mobile Dental Clinic for Kalihi schools in 2014.

2015

- Started offering Optometry services in 2015.

2018

In 2018, KKV started the Pathways program and began its Trauma Informed Care program with community health workers and Behavioral Health.

2019

- Initiated Lomilomi massage services at main clinic and Ho’oulu ‘Āina in 2019.

2020

- Launched the Na Koa Clinic and Hui Hoaka program in 2020.

2021

- Opened KKV’s Pharmacy in 2021.

- Expanded Pacific Voices Youth Program to a second site at Kalihi Elementary 2021.Pacific Voices is an after-school youth program where participants have the opportunity to learn and grow by practicing their culture through dance, chanting, and storytelling.
