Pros of working at Kumon North America

It's a great company when times are good. The benefits are fair and the complementary meals are plentiful. But like most jobs, when times are tough, the cuts grow and grow, not to mention the extra meetings and pressure to perform and produce. The management appear to try to get people to quit so they don't have to lay you off. That toxic atmosphere makes going to work every day somewhat excruciating. By the time you are let go, you almost have a sense of relief. But not quite. They lost their true vision years ago during the 2011 layoffs and did it again after 2020. Not a great track record, but they may never see the error of their ways.

Cons of working at Kumon North America

The pressure and inconsistency from management

Kumon North America benefits

Feeling part of a successful team and getting the well deserved recognition. The free meals/events were good for sure.

Pros of working at Kumon North America

I do not directly work for Kumon North America, but I currently work for one of their Franchises which is Kumon of Fremont Centerville. I absolutely love working here because the employees are like a family here. Our Center Director is the sweetest person, she understands that most of us are High school and College students so she does not put any pressure on us to get everything finished in that one center day.

Cons of working at Kumon North America

I love everything

Kumon North America benefits

Through this job I've gained the confidence of public speaking. Through this job I am required to give parent orientations almost every center day. I've also gained a lot of patience, because working with 3-7 year olds requires A LOT of patience!

Pros of working at Kumon North America

My favorite part working for Kumon was the opportunity to work with kids. I really liked the environment as I was able to work individually with students while tutoring them.

Cons of working at Kumon North America

There was nothing I did not like about working there, but the only issue was the timing of work. Kumon center was open from 3pm to 7pm, so it was during the middle of the day.

Out of curiosity did you work in the bay area? I've worked at a kumon for about half a year (a couple years ago) and it was an alright experience. My boss was disorganized, the place was messy, and some of the kids were constantly hiding their work/turning in incomplete packets which makes recording their grades a pain in the ***. My friends and i that worked there actually never did much "tutoring". It was mostly correcting work and handing it back/recording scores. I actually never really noticed any "tutoring" that really took place... I don't actually know if "smart" kids go to kumon, because i nor anyone i knew ever went there as a kid. But from my experience i'd say it seems like a fair mix of average kids, you have the "smart" ones that finish their work quickly and accurately as well as the ones that have impossibly bad handwriting make a lot of mistakes and well...everything in between.

I'm in Texas. Same about the tutoring, but I did do a lot of helping reading and counting with the junior kumon kids. Mine was in a fairly high class area so we were organized and most of the kids were ahead of their grade level. There were a few really bad ones. Like a high schooler doing fractions.

Man those were not good memories. Lots of days that could have been spent outside... Even worse, it totally didn't prepare me for college calculus or physics ;) My kumon teacher would draw a big circle the size of the page in bright red if it did not contain mistakes - did you do this, and if so why the circle? My mom told me it was Easter eggs for doing a good job, but somehow I'm not sure that's right...

No, just means it's all correct :) I like Easter eggs though! We also did big check marks to mean all correct. It's so you can flip through the packet quickly and count up mistakes fast

How did you deal with the crazy asian parents?

Most of them were surprisingly happy as long as their kid was progressing. Also, I had 2 super asian bosses who didn't like when parents would talk to me and would corral them up before they got to me. However, there were a couple who would interrogate me if the student was doing as well as they thought they should be. But I was the "teacher" so most of them got mad at their kids rather than me. It was sad sometimes. I actually had more crying kids than crazy parents.
