Created by Olivier Baussan in 1976, his story began after buying a distillation still where he extracted some rosemary essential oil.
Baussan had started L'Occitane in 1976 when he was 23.
The first store opened its door in 1981 in Provence; the brand pursues its development in the prestigious cities: Paris, New York, Hong-Kong and Tokyo.
Geiger bought a 33% stake in the company for $2.8 million in 1994 and joined the board, intending to take a passive role.
Last year revenue was up 14% over 2009 to $844 million, with profit up 30% to $117 million.
In 2009 Geiger opened Melvita boutiques in Croatia and Slovenia, and in Asia, he set up shop in Hong Kong.
By 2010 L'Occitane had closed all ten Oliviers & Co. stores in the United States, citing their negative impact on the balance sheet.
