La Jolla Institute for Immunology was established in 1988 by a coalition of leaders from academia and industry, including Doctor Makoto Nonaka, the Institute’s founding president, and Doctor Kimishige Ishizaka, the Institute’s first scientific director.
The Institute began its laboratory operations in 1989 with the arrival of two pioneering immunologists, Doctor Kimishige Ishizaka and Doctor Teruko Ishizaka, from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.
Kimishige Ishizaka was appointed president and scientific director of the institute in 1991.
Today, the Institute is led by Doctor Mitchell Kronenberg, who was appointed as president and scientific director in 2003.
The database, launched in 2006, was designed and developed by the La Jolla Institute under a multi-million dollar competitive contract from the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the NIH.
The advances made by researchers at the foundation attracted the attention of generous donors, prompting several name changes over the years; it has been known as Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute since 2015.
