1868
In 1868 stockman Robert Allison arrived in San Diego and purchased 4,000 acres from Arguello s heirs.
1887
W.C. Bishop of Chicago, Illinois, and wealthy lumberman George N. Fletcher established the Oto later Bar To ranch about 1887 on Fletcher's extensive landholdings in Dawson County.
1889
A post office was opened at the ranch headquarters on May 15, 1889, and named Chicago, both in honor of Bishop's home town and in humorous reference to the sparse population of the area.
Allison Springs, later renamed La Mesa Springs, prospered and grew after the arrival of the San Diego and Cuyamaca Eastern Railroad in 1889 now the route of the MTDB Trolley .
1893
Lamesa was plotted into lots, by M.C. Lindsey, Frank Connor, J. F. Barron, and several others about two miles south of the town of Chicago, which had been established in 1893.
1902
In 1902, Ed Fletcher and William Gross purchased the Villa Caro Ranch, which included the smaller peak on the north side of Mt.
The first school was opened in Lamesa in 1902.
1903
The City of Lamesa had its beginnings in July, 1903 when a block of 160 acres was carved out of the home section of Frank Conner's Ranch.
1904
When Walter Stemmons replaced him in both positions in 1904, the settlement was renamed Stemmons.
1906
The transformation from an agricultural area to a residential community began in 1906 when Sherman Grable purchased 100 acres in the Date Avenue area from land developer David Collier.
1910
In 1910, the two men developed it as a picturesque artist s colony.
1912
With a population of 700, the community incorporated as the City of La Mesa on February 16, 1912.
La Mesa, CA, known as The Jewel of the Hills was established in 1912.
1922
In 1922, Sawyer approached Fletcher who was busy investing in promoting the Grossmont area.
1925
But Fletcher didn t give up so easily he formed a new group of other investors that he knew and was able to revamp S-L in 1925 renaming it Grossmont Studios.
1934
According to a San Diego Union newspaper clipping dated 1934 that is also part of the Ed Fletcher Papers, the fire caused 75,000 in damages to the old studios and started a 15-acre brushfire that took three hours to extinguish.
1940
After incorporation the young city grew steadily, reaching 3,925 residents by 1940.
1942
Lamesa Field, an army airfield, was established in 1942 to give elementary and advanced glider training to army aviation cadets.
1945
In 1945 a home-rule charter was adopted establishing a council-manager form of government.
1948
Rediscover lost, but not forgotten, places and stories from La Mesa s past such as this warmly remembered movie-theater opened in 1948 near the corner of La Mesa Blvd and University Avenue.
1980
Post-World War II, La Mesa exemplified the exponential suburban growth of the region, expanding to the north and west of old downtown to accommodate 50,000 plus residents by 1980 all still attracted, as today, to the Jewel of the Hills.
1993
In 1993 the City purchased the old Lamesa Federal Bluebonnet Savings and Loan Building at 601 South First Street and converted it into a new Municipal Building housing the City Administration and Police Departments.
2011
They join another plaque that has been up in the village since 2011.
2014
On this date in 2014, Tony Gwynn died at the age of 54 he signed his first professional contract on the same date with the Padres 33 years earlier and never left San Diego.
