La Salle Academy company history timeline

1871

Since La Salle Academy’s founding in 1871, the Catholic high school has provided students with a quality education, regardless of socioeconomic status.

1880

Cooerwull Academy was founded in the 1880’s as a Presbyterian School for boarders and day students.

1883

1883 Cooerwull Academy opened.

1890

1890 The Sisters of St Joseph came to Lithgow, establishing St Patrick’s Primary School.

1894

1894 Andrew Brown died, aged 94.

1911

1911 Cooerwull Academy closed in September

1935

1935 (?) - Mr Ivor Brown purchased the building, extending the conversion into flats and later used the Academy as a poultry farm.

1953

1953 27th January, the De La Salle brothers opened La Salle Academy as a Catholic Boy’s school.

1975

1975 Four new classrooms built.

1983

1983 Art/craft room built

1995

The De La Salle Brothers conducted the school until 1995 when full lay administration was commenced.

1999

After closing Saint Michael parish school in 1999 because of economic conditions and changing demographics in the neighborhood, the pastor Father Herb Sperger felt the loss of a strong Catholic educational presence.

2009

2009 Refurbishment of art room and upstairs in the original sandstone building to accommodate the Special Education unit.
