Labette Community College was founded in 1923.
In 1935 however, the schools of Parsons became organized into a 6-4-4 basis. It was established in the fall of 1923 as Parsons Junior College, and was initially financed and operated as a part of the public school system of Parsons as a two-year extension program of the Senior High School.
The College program moved to the new Parsons Senior High-Junior College building (now Parsons Middle School) in 1926.
In 1935 however, the schools of Parsons became organized into a 6-4-4 basis.
The College relocated to its present campus in the former East Junior High School building at 14th and Broadway in 1963.
In June of 1965, voters approved the creation of the Labette Junior College District.
The Parsons Board of Education operated the College on an interim basis, but it became a separate entity when the Labette Community Junior College Board of Trustees was elected in the spring of 1966.
In 1967 Parsons Junior College became known as the Labette Community Junior College, following the new trends of the time period, separating Community Colleges as local, publicly funded school system, and Junior Colleges as private degree institutions.
In 1978, the College was renamed Labette Community College.
The college remained known by this name until 1980 when the school finally adopted the name of Labette Community College, which remains the name of the college to this day.
Institutionally administered financial aid is available to distance learners. It first offered distance learning courses in 1985.
In fall 2004, there were 200 students enrolled in distance learning courses.
Parsons is a National Main Street City and a 2006 Great American Main Street Award Winner.
